Your Itinerary

Eglise Saint-Etienne-du-Mont de Paris

It is on the steps at the foot of the north portal of the Saint-Étienne du Mont church, near the Place de l'Abbé-Basset, that, every evening, Gil Pender (Owen Wilson) waits for his strange friends who have come from another time. Very heterogeneous, this church mixes at the same time the Gothic, the classical decoration and the Renaissance. A marriage explained by the very long construction time since it extends between 1492 and 1626. The sculptures and statues were not added until the 19th century.

Pont Alexandre III

Gil is walking through Paris after breaking up with Inez. He meets Gabrielle on Pont Alexandre III.

Square Jean XXIII

Gil asks the museum guide from the Rodin Museum to translate a passage in the French book he bought at the market.

Shakespeare and Company Bookstore

After finally splitting with Inez, Gil drinks at l'Ile de France, 59 quai de la Tournelle at rue des Bernadins; and browses in Shakespeare and Company

Maxim's de Paris

Adriana and Gil are whisked further back to the Belle Epoque finery of Maxim’s, 3 rue Royale (metro: Concorde or Madeleine), where scenes for the 1958 musical Gigi were filmed, and on to the Moulin Rouge, 82 boulevard de Clichy (metro: Blanche) where, in turn, painters Toulouse Lautrec, Gauguin and Degas hanker after the great age of the Renaissance.

Deyrolle

The Surrealist wedding party, where Gil pitches the idea for The Exterminating Angel to a flummoxed Luis Buñuel, is the extraordinary Maison Deyrolle, 46 rue du Bac (metro: Rue du Bac), awash with insects and taxidermy. Since 1831, Deyrolle has offered animal, botanic and mineral specimens to nature lovers, schools, universities, museums and scientific institutions. it’s not surprising that its collection became a magnet for the Surrealists.

Polidor

The non-stop partying moves on to Le Polidor, 41 rue Monsieur le Prince (metro: Odéon), where Gil leaps at the opportunity of getting Ernest Hemingway (Corey Stoll) to cast an eye over his novel. A mere stripling, dating back only to 1845, Le Polidor was indeed patronised by Hemingway, along with fellow scribes Paul Verlaine, André Gide, James Joyce, Antonin Artaud and beat poet Jack Kerouac. For once, prices are comparatively modest and – don't worry – no, it hasn't been replaced by a launderette.

Place-Vendome

It is the starting point of the rue de la Paix. Its regular architecture and pedimented screens canted across the corners give the rectangular place Vendôme the aspect of an octagon. The original Vendôme Column at the centre of the square was erected by Napoleon I to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz. Stopping for picture

Musee Rodin

During a tour of the Musée Rodin in the Hotel Biron, 79 rue de Varenne (metro: Varenne), Paul contradicts the guide (a cameo from Carla Bruni) about the sculptor's wife and mistress. The Hotel Biron was Auguste Rodin's home from 1911 to his death in 1917, and he bequeathed his artworks to the nation on condition they be exhibited here.

Le Bar du Bristol

Gil and Inez stay at the luxurious Parisian hotel: Hotel Le Bristol, rue du Faubourg St Honoré
