Misty Fjords National Monument

Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

I can't say enough great things about this experience! Adam took our family of four on a flight through the Misty Fjords. He told us all about the area while showing us beautiful scenery. He landed on a high altitude lake where we got out on an island and took photos. Adam got some great panoramic shots of our family. It was the highlight of our day in Ketchikan and our favorite experience of the entire trip. I highly recommend this flight.

Landing and taking off on a lake in the wilderness and being on the rocky island. Excellent pilot who made the trip so special.

We just got back from an Alaskan cruise and by far my favorite part was the tour of Misty Fjords with Island Wings. Our pilot Adam was the best. This guy knows all you would ever want to know about the surrounding area. We flew over a whale so he circled back for another look and once we got into the fjords we saw two brown bears walking along the shore. We landed on a lake and got out onto the shore and all you gould hear was the water falling down the mountains. Most peaceful place I've ever been and the scenery is breathtaking. The Dehavilland Beaver that we flew in was immaculate, inside and out. Service from the entire staff the best. To top it all off, I got to ride in the copilots seat. Island Wings in Ketchikan is the one to go with.

Our pilot Adam was amazing - over 2 decades of flying experience in Alaska. He gave us magnificent views of the Misty Fjords and set us down on Big Goat Lake for some fresh air and photo ops. Definitely recommended! I’d also recommend sitting in the front seat to look at the instruments of the De Havilland or the far back seat solo for views out both sides of the plane.

Never made it to the trip. Booked through viator, operator cancelled my booking without explanation. A week later still waiting for refund d

I was scared. Like really really nervous, ended up booking at the last minute at the pier when our ship tour was cancelled. It was meant to be The views, and mean seriously! We were incredibly lucky as we had the perfect, blue sky day Our captain was so knowledgeable and friendly. We had the chance to land on an island that normally cannot be done but a few times a year due to the winds, waves and weather! So incredibly happy that we did it and recommend 100% ! And don't just book with anyone, you have to check out Island Wings!!!

Michelle is a highly experienced and friendly pilot who clearly loves sharing this exceptional beauty with people. Her plane is in immaculate condition. Landed on a mirror smooth mountain lake - wow. Highly recommended!

I don’t know many people who can say they were in a private float plane that landed in front of a waterfall impossible to get to really any other way, but I can say thanks to Adam and this company, my husband and myself have done this! Take off and landing were so incredibly smooth that it was nothing like the traditional jerkiness you might imagine on a commercial flight. Cruising at around 1,200ft up you’re able to see everything around. A bonus to our trip was seeing a sunken ship, flying next to a Bald Eagle, and a pilot who was incredibly smart and informative. With an epic playlist that matched the mood perfectly. This is a bucket list item!

My wife and I stayed in Ketchikan for 10 days and did about every tour available. Most were excellent. This was outstanding. If I were limited to only one tour, this would have been our pick. We shared the tour with two other couples but the plane was roomy and we all had great views. Misty Fjords was socked in with the weather so we went about 50 miles north and the pilot landed on Reflection Lake to see one of the Forestry Service's guest cabins. The scenery was no less than spectacular throughout the entire trip. The picture that accompanies the Island Wings webpage on Tripadvisor is no fluke - every bit of our flight looked like this. Every aspect of this tour was a pleasure and well worth the cost. Tripadvisor limits you to 5 stars. Spinal Tap would give this an 11.

My husband and I stayed in Ketchikan for a week and this was one of our favorite experiences! The views were absolutely stunning and getting to see the island from the air was so special. Our pilot, Michelle, was amazing. All of our take off and landings were incredibly smooth. I am prone to motion sickness but felt fine the entire time. She has lived in Ketchikan for a long time and is very knowledgeable about the area. Michelle pointed out interesting natural and historical aspects of what we were seeing and was able to answer all of our questions. I can't recommend this tour enough!
