Nuremberg Christmas Market

Until Christmas Eve, a small town of more than 180 wooden stands all decorated for Christmas and lighten up to transform it into a “Christmas City”. Find traditional Christmas hand-made ornaments from the local “Rauschgoldengel” (gold-foil angel), the “Zwetschgenmännle” (Little Prune Man), to a plethora of toys and games and delicious holiday treats for gifts. Try the famous 600 years traditional Lebkuchen and gingerbread cake and take a sip of the typical Glühwein, a hot mulled wine to warm you up in cold weather. Visit the Children's Christmas Market, with its nostalgic merry-go-round, bakery and Santa Claus’ home. Don’t forget to look for the Nuremberg Christkind, known as “baby Jesus”, who traditionally brings presents to children on Christmas day. Christkind is the symbol of Christmas here, and he visits the market from Tuesday to Friday, at 3 pm. With blond locks, a big crown and dressed in a gold dress. If you find him, ask for a picture or even tell him your Christmas wish!

Ekki was our guide for the Christmas market tour. Don’t be thinking this is a walk through the various tents of the Christmas markets. It is not. It is an informative, educational tour of the area . We began in the Christmas market area and went all around. We learned about the seven prince electors and walked to the Imperial Palace learning as we walked. The views are pretty from the Imperial Palace. We learned about the history behind it, found out about the well. The churches are spectacular! Ekki answered all the questions we had and that was good! We went from the crazy crowded Christmas market to the calm Rhine river. The suspenion bridge was fun to learn about. We were participants at the beginning of the tour and friends with Ekki at the end! Our granddaughter is a history major and Ekki was perfect for us. He spent extra time with us because he wanted us to have a wonderful experience and we enjoyed it ALL! Thank you for pairing us with Ekki.

Annemarie provided an exceptional introduction to the Nuremberg Christmas markets, historical and modern, all while integrating the development and importance of Nuremberg from medieval times through the Third Reich.

What a great time! We saw the markets and the surrounding areas with all the best recommendations for food, especially the gingerbread. Guide was fantastic and made sure we were well taken care of.

We were running late due to travel Delays and Thomas was able to accommodate us still. He showed us all the markets and we had Nuremberg Sausage, mulled wine, and gingerbread. He showed us some of the traditional Germany gifts and we ended up going back the next day to purchase gifts. He recommended a few places to eat and each were very good, he even got us in to one if his favorite restaurants right off the market. Thomas was great and made our stay in Nuremberg memorable.

We wanted something halfway between a tour of the markets and the medieval tour of the city, and Thomas (Tom) delivered a perfect combination! Next time we're in Nuremberg, we're doing another tour with him!

Great experience with Annemarie- history and knowledge well beyond seeing and experiencing the Nuremberg Christmas Market at night. Her insights and enthusiasm was exceptional!
