Your Itinerary

Fatima

According to a legend, the name of the city comes from the name of a Moorish princess called Fátima, and at the time of the Christian Reconquest, she was captured by the Christian army and given in marriage to a count of Ourém. In 1158, after converting to the Christian religion, she was baptized, having received the name of Oriana. The mountainous lands received the name of Fátima, and the county, the name of Oriana, that later would become Ourém. But Fátima is known worldwide because on May 13, 1917, Our Lady appeared to three children (Lúcia Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto) who were taking care of the sheep in Cova de Iria. He visited the three shepherds every day between May and October 1917. The last apparition took place on October 13, 1917, being witnessed by 70,000 pilgrims who attended the so-called Miracle of the Sun.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima

It is one of the most important Marian shrines in the world of the Catholic Church. In it, the memory of the Apparitions of Our Lady to the three little shepherds is preserved.

Capela Das Aparicoes

Built in response to a request from Nossa Senhora do Rosário, it is located in the sanctuary. The pedestal where you can see the original sculpture of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, marks the place where the small holm oak tree where the Virgin Mary appeared on May 13, 1917, to the three little shepherds, Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta.

Basilica of the Holy Trinity

Inaugurated on October 12, 2007, at the end of the 90th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady. This building is the fourth largest Catholic temple in the world in capacity, with 8633 seats and 40,000 m2 of area.

Batalha Monastery

The Monastery of Batalha or Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, was built in 1386 by King D. João I of Portugal, as a thank you to the Virgin Mary for the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota. It is one of the most significant monuments of Portuguese Gothic. It was donated by D. João I to the Order of S. Domingos, and is located close to the place where the important victory in the battle against the Castilians took place, which would become decisive to end the succession crisis after the death of the King Fernando. It was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983, due to its historical significance and architectural value. The construction of this monastery covered seven kingdoms and its interior is unmatched in beauty.

Nazare

It is a village with one of the oldest fishing traditions and one of the most colorful. The Sítio is a promontory where you get a breathtaking landscape and a legend that we cannot fail to tell. Legend has it that the mayor of the castle of Porto de Mós, D. Fuas Roupinho, was chasing a deer, on a foggy day when he was hunting, when the deer headed for the top of the cliff. When he saw himself almost at the edge of the precipice, D. Fuas Roupinho asked the Virgin Mary for help. If you walk through the streets of the village, you cannot miss the fishmongers with their seven skirts, the costume so well known and typical of the Nazarenes. Its beach in the shape of a half moon and the big waves so famous for surfers who face them fearlessly, make this village one of the places that you cannot miss.

Miradouro do Suberco

Located at Sítio, it is a rock formation with 110 meters high. From here you can get a spectacular view of the beach and the sea. According to what is said, here you can see the sign on the rock left by the horseshoe of D. Fuas Roupinho's horse.
