Your Itinerary

Setubal

In the 14th century, the first corporation of naval carpenters was founded in the city and salt was also extracted at that time. From there, several armadas left for India and King João II married here, also residing in this city. It was in this city that the poets Bocage and Sebastião da Gama were born, as well as the lyric singer Luisa Todi.

Forte de Sao Filipe

Also known as Castelo de São Filipe, it was built during the Spanish occupation, in 1582, during the reign of Filipe I, and its objective was to reinforce Setúbal's defense against pirates. It was classified as a National Monument in the 20th century. In addition to the spectacular views of Tróia, the Sado river and the city of Setúbal, in the interior there is also a small chapel all covered with tiles.

Monastery of Jesus of Setubal

Classified as a National Monument, it was founded in 1490, by the nurse of King D. Manuel I and is in Manueline style. The Gothic church is well known for the beautiful torsed columns made in breccia (a stone from the Serra da Arrábida) that support the vaults. The Setúbal Museum operates in the Convent, with several collections.

Parque Natural da Arrabida

Located by the sea, this park is stunning for its geographical location and for the rich vegetation and one of the attractions of the Park. There is also the Convent and some chapels that belonged to the Franciscan friars between the 16th and 19th centuries.

Sesimbra

Fishing village founded on the top of the hill around the Castle. Due to the fishing activity, the population was getting closer to the sea and became one of the main fishing ports in the region. It is one of the main summer resorts in the region, with its beaches (Praia do Ouro and Praia da Califórnia) being very popular during the summer.

Cabo Espichel

Here is located the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel, or Nossa Senhora da Pedra Mua. The cult appeared in 1410, when the image of Nossa Senhora do Cabo was discovered from Cabo Espichel. The church was built between 1701 and 1707, and due to the large number of people, the inns were built. Close to the Sanctuary, the 15th century Hermitage of Memory is located in the place where the apparition took place. Inside the chapel, you can see the 18th century tile panels, alluding to the legend of Senhora do Cabo.
