Ram Island Ledge Light

Ram Island Ledge is a reef of rock one-quarter mile long, marking the northern entrance into Portland’s outer harbor. It marks a treacherous spots to Mariners due to the exposure to strong currents and fluctuating tides that engulf the ledge at high tide. It occupies a very exposed position in the bay and navigational aids built prior to this Light had been washed away 3 times.
Fort Gorges

The construction of Fort Gorges was intiated by the War of 1812. Since then it has served as a military site in the Civil War, WW 1 and WW 2. Fort Gorges is an excellent example of an early to mid 19th century military facility and engineering achievement that typifies the technology of that era. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
