Potsdam

It is easy to see why the palaces and parks of Potsdam were designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1990. Not only is the city incredibly picturesque, with its many palaces, lakes, manicured gardens, statues and water fountains dotted over hundreds of green acres, but it is brimming with an equally fascinating history Stroll around the Dutch Quarter, an ensemble of red-brick buildings that is unique in Europe. The infamous 'Soldier King', Frederick William I, (renowned for the giant men he collected for his showcase military regiments), had the houses built in the middle of the 18th century to accommodate Potsdam's new community of Dutch artisans. See the stunning Sanssouci Palace, favourite residence of Frederick the Great, which is set in beautiful parkland scattered with temples, churches and follies. After crossing the Glienicke 'spy swapping' Bridge we visit Cecilienhof, the manorial residence of Germany's last Crown Prince, which was used to host the Potsdam Conference in 1945. We describe the discussions that took place between Churchill, Truman and Stalin, which were to seal the fate of Cold War Europe for the next half century.

Apparently my wife and I were the only ones in the group tour. Our guide showed up on time, but he suggested to pay 50 additional euros to take a faster train to Potsdam, he said that the regular one used by the tour was too slow! So we decided to pay him the additional 50 euros. Upon arriving in Potsdam , he took us into a city bus to get to the location of the palace where the famous conference took place. We had to pay for the entrance tickets. After this we took another city bus to take us to the Sanssouci palace, and we had to pay for the entrance tickets. After lunch, we returned by city bus to the train station to return to Berlin. Sincerely, we assumed we were going to be taken in a private bus or van to Potsdam and not in train and city buses. We are older people and the pressure to be at each site was very tiring and exhausting for my wife and myself. We were not happy with that tour. What a difference with our tour to Hallstatt in Austria. That was a fantastic day trip.

The logistics of this trip are poor. Our guide informed us that the included transport was slow and spasmodic on a long weekend and that we should purchase, at an extra expense of 25 euros each, tickets on the faster train. He obtained the tickets on his phoned and required us to repay him in cash, a very unprofessional arrangement. As it was we had to wait 30 minutes for the fast train. When we got to Potsdam, we went to get tickets to visit the interior of the palaces. There were no tickets available until 2:30pm, which meant that we couldn't visit the interior of the palaces within the time frame of our tour. If we had been informed of this we would have purchased the tickets in advance. We stopped for lunch at a cafe, which had very slow service. Our guide knew this as he said multiple times as we were waiting for our meals, that 'this place always is slow'.It would have been much better if he had said this up front and directed us elsewhere. Due to lost time we didn't get to the Dutch quarter. Our guide did not seem to have any more information than was in the public brochure. We finished the tour thinking that it would have been a much better experience if we had gone by ourselves.

Potsdam is a beautiful and historical city. We loved walking through the Christmas market to Sans Souci palace. Even though it was a very cold day our guide Shadi made the experience fun and interesting.

Our tour guide Shadi went over and beyond by showing us around Potsdam and more . He was super friendly and made the tour fun as well . He brought us to try a local Turkish restaurant who served us the best doner. Best part was walking us thru the gardens around the palaces.

Our tour guide Seba was fabulous! She was great company, very helpful and extremely knowledgeable! It is great value for the money. I learned alot and this day tour was one of the highlights to my European visit!

The tour was just okay. Unfortunately, our tour guide, who was extremely kind, seemed lost more often than not. He provided some information about the sites but not at the level we expected. The tour was flexible but I ended up making the itinerary far more than the guide, which was odd. We've done many tours in different cities and this was one of the weakest.
