The Pink Street

(Pass by)

Rua Nova do Carvalho is the official name of Lisbon’s Pink Street, and lies in the now popular neighborhood Cais do Sodre. Cais do Sodre used to be Lisbon’s Red-Light District. Lisbon was an important port city, meaning lots of sailors would come into the city to gamble, drink, and to ‘get some’. Rua Nova do Carvalho was the place to be, as there were gambling dens, brothels, and seedy bars named after other port cities. Sailors weren’t the only visitors, it was a meeting point for local criminals, streetwalkers, and prostitutes too. Yeah, we bet you didn’t know this quirky street had such shady beginnings!

Lisbon Cathedral

This is the oldest cathedral of Lisbon called Se de Lisboa. It was built by moors as a mosque in 8th century and later after the moorish defeat it was converted by Portuguese.

Alfama

The steep streets of Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest areas, are lined with shops selling traditional crafts and cafes. Passengers pack the historic no. 28 tram, which winds through Alfama on its way up to 11th-century São Jorge Castle. In the evening, melancholy Fado music can be heard in some of the area's long-running restaurants.

Chafariz D'El Rei

(Pass by)

Chafariz de El-Rei – the royal fountain, is the oldest city spring and the first public fountain in Lisbon. It was built in the 13th century using the excellent waters of the Alfama slope. Thanks to King D. Dinis it was expanded, and by the order of King D. João II in 1487, the water flowed to the fountain in pipes to supply drinking water to ships setting off for commercial purposes and on discovery expeditions. In its heyday, Chafariz de El-Rei even had nine working nozzles, each with a different purpose: one for filling all kinds of jugs and barrels, others only for specific social groups (including one for sailors!).

Museu do Fado

(Pass by)

You don't have to be a fan of fado to enjoy the Fado Museum. It’s much more than a tribute to Lisbon’s musical genre (which was placed on the World Heritage list in 2011), it also shows the cultural and political environment in Portugal, and especially in the capital, throughout much of the 20th century.

We had the best Tuk Tuk tour with Rifat ! We landed early and we did the tour straight from the airport. It gave us a great overview of the city, so we knew where to go back and visit! Rifat was so knowledgeable and gave us such great history. This tour is a must !!

Great option to see Lisbon’s highlights without dealing with all the crowds (and hills). Our guide was Rifat, a well-spoken and knowledgeable gentleman. He catered the tour to our preferences and even gave us lots of tips/recommendations after the tour was over. Yes, we could have seen the sights for significantly less than the 130 euro, but this was truly hassle free.

Rifat was great throughout the whole tour. The best way to discover the city. Defiantly recommend a tour with Rifat.

Our driver Rana. He was great, informative without overwhelming, and has a great smile besides. He's the best.

Rana is great, very knowledgeable but also fun and willing to go the extra mile. Couldn't ask for better.

Our tour guide was so pleasant and knowledgeable. He shared parts of the city by vehicle and on foot that we never would have seen. Just a great tour.

Masud Rana was excellent. We were unsure whether to take the hop on hop off bus or a Tuk Tuk. The Tuk tuk was the only way to go as it got us to places in the city where busses could never go. Rana hit all the highlights in the 2 hour tour and took pictures of us as a couple which we hardly get to take on our own. One of the highlights was stopping in Alfama for the famous Ginjinha liquor served in a chocolate cup. Rana knew the proprietor and we stopped in for a few minutes. Masud knew the area so well and we got into very tight locations thanks to his knowledge and excellent driving. We had a great tour to see the highlights of the city and it gave us a feel for Lisbon as this was our first full day in the city. Thanks to Masud we found locations we went to via Metro later in the day.

What a memorable tour through the streets and places of interest. We had the best time in the cutest Tuk Tuk in town. So knowledgeable and the sites are city.
