The city, which can be traced back to Roman times, takes its name from the freshwater springs which continue to well up in the gardens of the moated Bishop’s residence.

This magnificent early English Gothic Style Cathedral has been described as “the most poetic of the English Cathedrals” and it is famous for its scissor arches, clock, stunning chapter house and stained-glass windows.

Had a wonderful time on this private tour with Matthias and cannot recommend this tour enough. I had been to the Cotswolds a few times already so I knew I wanted to see another part of the countryside - and Wells did not disappoint. It was the perfect quintessential small-town, authentic, quaint but majestic city (it is in fact the smallest city in England) and it was amazing to visit on market day. After Wells and a great lunch with Matthias, we ventured to Glastonbury - definitely quite different from Wells. We enjoyed the serenity of the cathedral grounds and ruins but wouldn't say Glastonbury is my vibe per se (cynical NYer here). Either way, it was a fantastic day out seeing both! If you are looking for a private tour guide, book Matthias! He was professional, very conversational and made you feel instantly comfortable in his company - plus a good sense of humor! He definitely helped make my 4th trip to Bath a very memorable one!

We were a group of 5 ladies taking the sites in Somerset and Bath. Matthias is a perfect guide. He has a wealth of knowledge and took great care of us. As you can see from my photos, it was quite a soggy day but Matthias manage to keep the spirits high. And even sang a beautiful song in front of Glastonbury Abbey thorn tree. Wells cathedral is not to be missed. The architecture is spectacular and we even got to hear the bells ring and watch its famous clock come to life. We were very comfortable in his car and Matthias is a very safe driver. He also had umbrellas for us. He took care of everything. We were all very happy with Matthias and with what we we saw and experienced. I would definitely book his tours again.

Matt was a wonderful, thoughtful host on our day tour of Wells and & Glastonbury. It was a rainy day, but he was prepared with umbrellas! Knowing the rain would slightly impede our day, he added an additional sight, which we greatly appreciated. HIs knowledge of Wells and Glastonbury was impressive and we truly appreciated learning the history. Our lunch was very tasty and he introduced us to Cider, a drink we embraced and drank throughout our stay in England. I would highly recommend Matt - you'll be very happy with his tours.
