What to expect
Wells
The tour starts with a private walking tour of the historic centre of Wells, the smallest city in England, famous for its mediaeval streets, magnificent Cathedral, picturesque Bishop's Palace and Marketplace. The city, which can be traced back to Roman times, takes its name from the freshwater springs which continue to well up in the gardens of the moated Bishop’s residence.
Wells Cathedral
This magnificent early English Gothic Style Cathedral has been described as “the most poetic of the English Cathedrals” and it is famous for its scissor arches, clock, stunning chapter house and stained-glass windows. Tickets will be purchased on arrival.
Vicar's Close
Adjoining the Cathedral is Vicars’ Close, a charming cluster of houses frozen in time from the 14th century and believed to be the oldest residential street in England.
The Bishop's Palace And Gardens
We cross the atmospheric Marketplace to view the only mediaeval palace in Somerset, which has been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for more than 800 years. Walk over the beautiful moat and drawbridge, where you might catch the resident swans ringing a bell for lunch as they have done for generations.
Glastonbury
After lunch in a traditional English pub the tour continues on to Glastonbury, a town that is steeped in mystery and legend. This former market town turned New Age hangout is full quirky shops, where alternative is the norm. Visit the Abbey or climb the iconic Tor to savour the panoramic views over the Somerset Levels.
Glastonbury Abbey
The walking tour starts from the grounds of the impressive ruined Abbey, which is reputed to be the burial place of King Arthur. According to legend this is also where Joseph of Arimathea arrived with the Holy Grail to establish the first English Christian church. Thereafter, enjoy an entertaining stroll through this lovely town centre or climb the Tor. Admission tickets will be purchased on arrival.
Glastonbury Tor
This iconic hill dominates the surrounding landscape and has been a spiritual magnet for centuries, for both Pagans and Christians. The views from the summit are breath-taking and the experience is unforgettable. This is where prehistoric history, ancient folklore and Arthurian legends all merge.
The experience can be subject to change due to bad weather or unforseen circumstances. We always endeavour to give you the best possible experience.
