Tate Modern

A boat trip down the Thames links the two Tates and provides a wonderful panorama of London from the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben to St. Paul's and the City of London. You alight on the South Bank for the Tate Modern, the famous conversion of the Bankside Power Station (1957-60) which took place during the 1990's to house the 20 C. collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. Apart from the exciting modern collection of paintings, sculptures, and objects, it enjoys from the top floor splendid views over the Thames towards St. Paul's, to which it has been linked by the Millennium pedestrian bridge by Norman Foster. It also contains an imposing collection of modern European masterpieces from the beginning of the 20 C with great works by the Italian futurists like Boccioni or metaphysical painters like De Chirico, French masterpieces in sculpture and paintings like Degas' Dancers, Matisse, Picasso and an impressive collection of American Abstract Expressionists. Our guide Mark provided a wealth of knowledge as we made our way through each museum. He expertly navigated us through the most important pieces in each gallery. However, 3 hours is not enough time to fully experience and appreciate these 2 museums. We felt rushed as we sprinted through this tour. I would advise making this 2 separate trips for a more engaging experience.

Mark was an extremely knowledgeable guide and an art expert. I cannot say enough good things about Mark's ability to bring both Tate Museums to life. If you are going to the Tates, make sure you get Mark. You will not be disappointed.

Janine was our experienced guide. She was super professional, extremely knowledgeable, patient with us & a hoot! We really had such a great time with her. Can’t recommend her enough!!

Mark Bishop was the perfect guide. Five and a half stars. His deep personal art experience shines through.

Our guide Ana María was fine. Was on time. Was very friendly and professional. But (but) we couldn't help to leave with the feeling that all she knew about the Tate Galleries was strictly the 12 or 15 pieces she showed us in both Galleries. She just basically told us literally what it was already written in the ID stuck on the wall next to every piece of art. Every time I asked about some other piece or some other space of the Galleries, she would answer (that, I don't know about). At least she was honest :)...but you would definitely expect more from a 4 hour private $550 tour. My recommendation, hire some other tour (there are plenty in Viator).

Our guide, Paul, was very knowledgeable and gave us much insight into the paintings, artists and events occurring in history at the time of the paintings. He also gave us recommendations to find more info on our favorite artists. I highly recommend this tour and Paul. It was fun, educational and very thorough.

I paid a lot of money for this tour. I expected a minimum of 2 hours at easy museum not including transporting from one to another. It was marketed as all day. But it was only 3 hours in total.

Superb knowledge, excellent pacing and use of time. Spoke clearly, open to new ideas/interpretations. We learned so much! Highly recommend Marguerite! Artstur!

Marguerite was an excellent guide. I felt both Tate's were inferior to the National Gallery and next time will just go there. The Turner's were superb.
