My husband and I had a wonderful time with Artur. He went out of his way to pick us up on the “10th island” (beautiful Pedreira) and was also very understanding regarding some mixups with our plans. We greatly enjoyed learning about Azorean history from him and felt comfortable in his company all night long. He took us to an amazing miradoura, told stories, and we never felt rushed. After the hot springs, both my husband and I enjoyed the cozida for dinner and Artur helped me order a vegetarian version (it is still cooked with the meat so may not work for vegans). Truly delicious. My husband ate his weight in meat and said it was the best he’s ever had. On our way home, we discussed culture and politics, which I greatly appreciated because as an American who doesn’t (yet) speak Portuguese, it was otherwise challenging to learn and discuss topics such as the capote e capelo, the giant hooded cloaks Azorean women wore many moons ago. Artur treated us as friends and made us feel very welcomed on the beautiful island of Sao Miguel.
