Your Itinerary

Sintra National Palace

(Pass by)

We passed by the place. The National Palace of Sintra, also known as Palácio da Vila, was one of the palaces used by the Portuguese Royal Family practically until the end of the Monarchy, in 1910. With urban implantation, its construction began in the 15th century, with traces of an unknown author. It features features of medieval, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance and Romantic architecture. It is considered an example of organic architecture, of a set of apparently separate bodies, but which are part of an articulated whole, through patios, stairs, corridors and galleries. It has the largest set of Mudejar tiles in the country. It is dominated by two large twin chimneys that crown the kitchen and constitute the "ex-libris" of Sintra.

Palacio e Parque Biester

Passage through the site. Casa Biester is located at the beginning of the Serra de Sintra, from where you can enjoy one of the most wonderful views of Sintra. This building was the scene of the movie "The Ninth Door" with Jonny Depp.

Admission Not Included

Castelo dos Mouros

Free gardens, can walk for about 30 minutes. It's optional. Admire the beauty of Castelo dos Mouros. Castelo dos Mouros is a ruined castle nestled among the lush forests of the Serra de Sintra, a privileged spot to admire the view that stretches from Sintra to the sea. Winding along two peaks of the Serra de Sintra, the Castle dates back to the beginnings of the peninsular occupation by the Moors, in the 8th century.

Park and National Palace of Pena

You can choose to visit or not. You can purchase tickets for gardens or gardens and palace. It represents one of the best expressions of 19th century Romanticism in the world. Rising on a steep rock, it is the second highest point in the Serra de Sintra. On July 7, 2007, it was chosen as one of the seven wonders of Portugal, being, in fact, the first romantic palace in Europe, built about 30 years before the charismatic Schloss Neuschwanstein, in Bavaria. From the Palace, visitors can see a mantle of trees covering more than 200 hectares. This park has beautiful paths and walks, with numerous garden constructions existing there. There are bridges and caves, garden benches, pergolas and fountains. Greenhouses and nurseries with camellias, rhododendrons and roses of unusual and very rare strains. The entire Parque da Pena is today considered the park in Europe, with the richest and most unusual set of tree species that no longer exist in many other countries and continents where they originate.

Quinta da Regaleira

You can choose to visit or not. Also known as Palácio do Monteiro dos Milhões, a name associated with the nickname of its former owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. The palace is located on the slopes of the mountains and a short distance from the historic center of Sintra. Carvalho Monteiro, through the lines of the Italian architect Luigi Manini, transforms the 4-hectare farm into a palace surrounded by lush gardens, lakes, caves and enigmatic buildings, places that hide alchemical meanings, such as those evoked by Freemasonry, Templars and Rosicrucians. It models the space in mixed layouts, which evoke Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Manueline architecture. Quinta da Regaleira is a place to feel. It is not enough to tell him about the memory, the landscape, the mysteries. It is necessary to get to know it, contemplate the scenography of the gardens and buildings, admire the Palace, a true philosopher's mansion of alchemical inspiration, walk through the exotic park and feel its spirituality.

The sea, the little beach and the houses, framed by majestic cliffs, constitute one of the most beautiful scenarios on the Portuguese coast.

Boca do Inferno

This was the most disappointing experience of our vacation. We loved visiting Sintra, but our experience with this company was subpar. We waited at the meeting place and no one showed up. We finally called after 15 minutes and were told, “we are running late and couldn’t find your information”. We were finally picked up 30 minutes after our scheduled time by a substitute driver. We had scheduled tickets for Pena Palace so he went straight there and skipped the visit to Palacio e Parque Biester. We were late for our visit to Pena Palace, though thankfully were still able to enter. We were told to “explore and then call the driver to be picked up”. We called for the driver as told and waited for another 30 minutes to be picked up. We then drove by Monserrate and were able to take some photos. We then saw a few other areas in Sintra, which were not listed on the tour description, and were taken back to the company’s office in town. Our driver walked us to the exit of Quinta da Regaleira (15 minutes) and we had to walk another 5 minutes uphill to find the entrance. We were told to find our own way back to the train station ( our scheduled drop off point). We didn’t see Boca do Inferno or Cascais as our driver had to “pick up his daughter”. We paid for a full day tour (6-8 hours) and were only with the driver for 4.5 hours, and had to walk to two of our stops. There were tuk tuks outside of the train station waiting and drivers at each of the monuments we visited, so don’t waste your time and money booking this trip, just show up and hire a driver for each leg of the visit. It will save you money and time. Incredibly disappointing!

Rita was our driver and guide. She was great and we had a lot of fun! Her local knowledge and in-depth historical perspective made us appreciate the history of Portugal even more. Riding in the tuktuk proved to be beneficial as the roads are tight and hills are steep.

We took a beautiful full day tour with Jose. It was wonderful. He stopped at several unique places. He had lots a great stories and historical information which I love. He suggested a wonderful place for lunch right on the ocean cliffs. It was stunning. Great tour and I’m so glad we did it. Perfect way to see the sights up close.

We felt a little overwhelmed when we arrived to Sintra, and eventually found ourselves in the welcome center and (easily) talked into the full day tour, and for the price is was definitely worth it! Josè was our tour guide and he did not disappoint at all. He was such a kind soul with tons of knowledge and love for the thing he does and where he does it. He was allowed to walk around the Pina Palace gardens with us and by the end of it it felt as if we were hanging out with a friend who was showing us all of his favorite spots throughout the city. We visited the big spots but also got what felt like some of the secret gems of Sintra as well. Josè went above and beyond for our tuk tuk experience and next time I’m in Portugal, I would definitely go back just for him. Thank you for making our time on moon mountain so special :)
