V&A - Victoria and Albert Museum

After joining your guide you will be introduced to the most amazing objects designed by artists and craftsmen. Started as a school of design since 1836, the Museum was soon called “A People’s Palace", which was re-established to continue the famous Crystal Palace Exhibition. Its future Director Henry Cole said: “This Museum based on Design and Manufacture will educate designers, inspire manufacturers and reform the taste of the public at large. Your guide who will show you briefly the main Museum Galleries of European, American and Asian Art, will concentrate in the highlight of the Museum. He or she will show you the mode of the first prefab glass building used to hold in the Park the Great Exhibition of 1851 called “The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations”, later expanded to all Arts. You will see Ancient Textiles and Modern Chairs, works by Michelangelo, Leonardo and Giambologna; Bernini’s largest marble statue moved out of Italy; Canova and Rodin’s sculptures. In the Islamic Galleries the Ardabil Carpet, the largest and finest carpet in the world; Tipu’s Tiger from Misore; Indian Jewellery, European Jewellery from Ancient to Modern times, Miniatures and Limnings, Clothes by the best designers of our day, Glass and Ceramics galore, etc. etc. This private tour is hosted by a professional guide specializing in art history.

We had a private tour with Mark. Nice enough guy. Duration 3 hours. He may have been knowledgeable but he was boring and unengaging. It wasn’t worth the money for a private tour.

My husband and I had never visited the Victoria & Albert Museum, despite many visits to London. Our guide, Mark Bishop was extraordinary! His knowledge of both the history and the art and design features of the collections was detailed and delightful. His ability to give both historic overview and insight of each collection really brought the collections to life.

Wonderful tour with fabulous information on both the history and purpose of the museum coupled with specific exhibits to illustrate.

Don’t be taken in by this scam. The Victoria and Albert Museum is free (except for temporary exhibitions which charge for admission). More to the point the museum has a team of expert voluntary guides who run FREE tours throughout the day (see V&A website for details and reviews).

The V&A put on some great exhibitions and this was one of them. I learned so much about this amazing woman and I had no idea what a challenging life she had with her health. The V&A is a fantastic venue and was able to cope with the mass of people who wanted to go. The staff really got into the mood of Frida and dressed in some of her signature pieces, which was a lovely touch.

Not every exhibition here is up to scratch - but when they do one well - its momentous and memorable. Winnie the Pooh for a recent example was divine- though what on earth those stuffed toy monstrosities in the shop have to do with the original drawings is somewhat of a mystery. Given that the VnA prides itself on being a shopping destination it needs to step up on the exhibition shops. The dining rooms - are wonderful but why oh why did they put a plastic white anonymous cafe running alongside them. I pity the poor visitors who have never discovered these rooms. You get discount as a member in the shop and cafe. The permanent exhibition of tapestries is a really great place to find a soulful peace, as are the miniature paintings.

I thought the private tour was rather expensive for what we received. The tour giude focused on Italian artwork and there was so much more to see. I wish that the tour guide had been more informative about the museum in general.

Rosa Maria is an OUTSTANDING guide !!! ... We enjoyed the tour immensely !!!

I was totally embarrassed that I arranged this tour; the guide was not only late, he did not have any sign identifying himself or reaching out to our group; although he was very knowledgable of art history, he ran us around only to tell us mid tour that we would not be doing the walking tour of Apsley House, because it was closed. His appearance was dis-shoveled, and he kept checking his cell phone???? I wish I could recommend this tour;
