The statue is an impressive if imposing sight from Lisbon on the opposite side of the river. While not religious in any way, we felt the need to visit the site, explore the point and see the statue from a nearer perspective. The overall site is quite beautiful ... a large, red brick building defines two sides of the property. Olive trees are planted generously around to provide shaded spots for sitting and quiet meditation. There are facilities to provide food and drink, souvenirs and washrooms. The statue itself and those surrounding it are impressive in their artistry casting huge shadows as the sun crosses the sky. At the foot of the statue is a large, black cross ... probably referencing the cross Christ was said to have hung on at Calvary. At the time we were there, the sun favoured us with its position. As we photographed the statue from the front, the sun was positioned directly behind the head of the Christ creating a brilliant halo around the head. While it limited the ability to see the finer details of the face of the Christ, the halo suggested the proof of the majesty of Christ. As I said, we are not religious but certainly appreciated the religious references of the moment. There was a significant line up to ascend the elevator to to the top of the statue so we forewent that experience. That said, the views back to Lisbon and the light of the day illuminated the subtle colours that make Lisbon the beauty it is at its waterfront and along the hills that it rises upon. We highly recommend the opportunity to visit the Christo Rei statue and to take in the views of Lisboa.
