Reichstag Building

The Reichstag was built in 1894 for the first German parliament. After World War I it became home to the Parliament of the Weimar Republic. Then, it 1933, shortly after Hitler's rise to power, a fire destroyed much of the inside and the building was closed. Hitler did not need a parliament. It wasn't until reunifacation that the building was restored and the new German Parliament was ready to move in.

Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate may well be Berlin's, no, Germany's most famous landmark.

Unter den Linden

(Pass by)

Unter den Linden begins at the Hohenzollern Palace and ends at the Brandenburg Gate. Some of Berlin's oldest buildings such as the Opera and the Kronprinzenpalais are located here.

Potsdamer Platz

Visit Sony Center with its amazing architecture and see Germany's oldest traffic light. See the remains of the Berlin Wall and architecture by Renzo Piano, Hans Kollhoff and Helmut Jahn.

Topography of Terror

On the site of the former SS and Gestapo Headquarter, the buildings' foundation have been excavated and a Documentation Center has been added. You will also see the remains of the Berlin Wall.

Checkpoint Charlie

This was definitely the most famous of the checkpoints of the Berlin Wall. This one was reserved for Military Personnel and foreign, mostly American visitors who wanted to enter the Eastern Part of the City during the Cold War.

Gendarmenmarkt

Berlin's most beautiful square with the German Dome on one side and the French Dome on the other. In the center: Schinkel's Konzerthaus.

Berliner Dom

(Pass by)

The Berlin Dome is Germany's largest Protestant Church modeled after St. Peters. The Hohenzollern used to worship here and many of their family members, among them King Friedrich Wilhelm I and his wife are buried here.

Museum Island

The five museums on Museum Island have been recognized as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Stay after your tour and visit the Pergamon and/or the Neues Museum!

Tomas, our guide brought the stories that surrounded us to life. He took us through the unforgiving history of Berlin with intelligence and sensitivity. Tomas is a gifted storyteller that also took care of us as we experienced Berlin for the first time. I highly recommend seeing Berlin through his eyes.

Thomas was the most captivating, enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide we’ve ever had in Europe. He customized our tour to focus on the German history that my son was interested in—rather than generic book information. He really brought German history to life. It’s the first tour that my son was disappointed when it ended!

I had another company set up two private tours in Berlin. They chose A Friend in Berlin and my guide was Josh. I'm a bit remiss in posting a review. I had the tours in mid-September and then got carried away by the rest of my trip. But I enjoyed the tours so much I wanted to make sure that I gave them a five-star rating. Josh was knowledgeable, interesting and interested in my questions and what I wanted to see. The first tour was a Highlights of Berlin scheduled for the day after my arrival. I really felt that I got an excellent baseline of the city, its history and its culture. The second tour piggybacked on the first with a bit more emphasis on WWII. I would highly recommend A Friend in Berlin.

Thomas brought me and my children all across Berlin, west to east, by foot, bus and train, always stopping along the way to explain and elaborate on the vastly different periods of German history and the impact they've left on the surrounding environment. A really thoughtful, nourishing tour.

Our company visited Berlin for a few days, and enjoyed an educating tour with Jo. She is a great storyteller and give you the best and greatest insight to some of the main landmarks and historical buildings. She has a good sense of humour and you can tell that she loves the city of Berlin as much or even more than her own family. We had a two hour trip, but I would recommend a three hour trip as time flies when you are in great company. I would highly recommend Jo and A Friend in Berlin.
