Puerta de Alcala
Next, stop by the 16th-century Alcalá Gate, designed by a famous royal architecture under the orders of King Carlos III. The imposing portal, one of the five royal gates of the ancient city, was the first triumphal arch built in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. The ornate façade, laden with sculptures, capitals, bas-reliefs, etc., stands as a testament to the city’s rich history.
Puerta de Felipe IV
Enter through the Phillip IV Gate, the central west entrance to the El Retiro Park. Interestingly enough, the current site is not its original location. The enchanting gate, initially built in celebration of a royal wedding, was designed in the elegant Baroque style.
Parque del Retiro
Arrive in El Retiro Park at the end of the tour, the veritable paradise in the heart of Madrid. This major urban park was built in the 17th century as an exclusive royal garden but then became public. It boasts a charming blend of spectacular architecture, including magnificent monumental buildings and a large artificial lake, with expert gardening.
