Your Itinerary

Arc de Triomf

Built for the Universal Exposition in 1888, the Arc de Triomf stood at the head of the avenue that led to the main entrance of the fair, in Parc de la Ciutadella. The redbrick monument, built in the Neo-Mudéjar style, reflected the eclectic, decorative taste so typical of Catalan Art Nouveau in vogue at that time.

Pl. de Sant Pere, 6

Today, the Plaça de Sant Pere is a quiet and charming corner, presided over by the church that gives the district its name. The history of this building is closely linked to the history of the city itself. This is where the old nunnery of Sant Pere de les Puel·les used to be. It was one of the most powerful in medieval Barcelona and it helped to generate the development of an entire neighbourhood around it.

La Capilla de Marcus

Chapel Marcus is one of the oldest in Barcelona, whose foundation next to a hospital and a cemetery is due to the powerful banker Bernat Marcús. Romanesque style, is situated at the confluence of the streets of Carders and Moncada and still today you can see a part of the original structure of the twelfth century.

Barri de La Ribera

The street called Carrer de Montcada is today the most important area of mediaeval civic architecture in the city. It starts with the Romanesque Marcus chapel (12th century) and finishes at Plaça del Born. It used to be all one single street until the 19th century, when it was divided into two by the opening of Carrer Princesa in 1853. Its name derives from the important Montcada family from Barcelona who, it appears, received the land in the 12th century for the support lent to King Ramon Berenguer IV by Guillem Ramon de Montcada during the conquest of Majorca.

Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar

Also known as the "cathedral of La Ribera", is one of the most perfect examples of Gothic style architecture due to its harmonious proportions and the serenity of the ensemble. In the Middle Ages, the long periods of time it took to build a church – often more than a century – usually involved changes in architectural style. Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona is an exception. It was built in just 55 years, from 1329 to 1384, and is the only surviving church in the pure Catalan Gothic style.
