This is a relatively easy walk and as it follows a levada there is no difficult slopes to negotiate. When we did it the weather was none too kind and although it did not rain all the time, when it did, it was a downpour. As the walk is at a little altitude it is sometimes in cloud and so the views can be obscured. We were taken up to the start point in Ribeiro Frio by mini bus from our hotel and were taken back to Funchal by mini bus after finishing the walk. The walk does have some sections that are close to the edge so those of a nervous disposition regarding heights might like to take note. The walk also crosses across cliff faces (no climbing required!) and, as water has a habit of finding the lowest level by the quickest route, it comes off the top of the cliff onto the path below. We had to negotiate about three such 'waterfalls' and that, together with the rain, meant that we got very wet! So be prepared and make sure any bags or back packs are adequately covered and that you have suitable footwear. Despite the weather and getting soaked we thoroughly enjoyed it and, if we return to Madeira we would certainly look to go on another levada walk. The guide was very knowledgeable and approachable and was able to speak several languages.
