I actually did 3 walks. All great and matched my experience last year. Small groups. Lots of local information and history..well organised highly recommended. Guides were very knowledgeable which made it even more interesting..still fall for Alvaro's jokes !

We had been thinking of getting the bus to a point and then doing a levada walk and getting the bus back to the hotel at the end, but trying to understand the bus timetable was not easy so we thought we would start with a half day guided walk where all that hassle is taken away. Bus picks you up from the hotel and drops you off there at the end. One of the guides will drive the bus to the end of the walk so it is there waiting for you. So we started off with the Levada do Norte easy flat walk and were really impressed with out guide, Alvaro. His knowledge of every element of the walk was outstanding, knowing exactly where you would get the best views from, as well as pointing out some of the interesting flora along with way which if we had been walking by ourselves, we would have missed. He was also extremely conscious of safety steering us away from potentially dangerous edges of the path or telling us which was the best to traverse a path. We were so impressed with the slick organization that as soon as we got back to the hotel we booked the Ribeiro Frio – Portela walk for the next day. Again, we had Alvaro as our guide and exactly the same quality of knowledge plus this time he even had bird seed with him so that we could feed the birds from our hands once he had called them. Also bread to get the trout jumping in one of the pools along the way. So much better than just walking by yourself and it was just a pity we did not have longer on the island to do more of their amazing walks. We will be back to do some more walks with Madeira Free Spirit Walks.

A great walk along the levadas! Some beautiful views, great variety of vegetation, some sightings of birds. Overall a wonderful experience.

I was fortunate enough to do 3 walks with Free Spirit Walks within the 5 days on the island, Ribeiro Frio, Larano Cliff Walk and Rabaçal - 25 Fontes. All very different but individually beautiful. I found the trips really easy to book, well organised and good value for money. As a solo traveller the fact that I was collected and dropped back off at my hotel, really helped and put me at ease, especially on the first day. All my walks were with Susana, who was just the most fantastic guide. Friendly, relaxed, funny and informative and went at a pace which suited everyone in the group. Going with a group was great as I met different people and meant that I could explore the island with others and have conversations whilst taking in the beautiful scenery. I hope to get back to the island soon and would definitely use Free Spirit Walks again. Thank you for making my trip so special.

Filipe was a great guide and I enjoyed walking the levados with him. I think I would choose a different walk if I had more time. That walk was very much the same from beginning to end with no variation. But it was a great group and an enjoyable day.

This was my fourth walk with Free Spirits, and lived up to expectations. The collection and bus trip was trouble-free. Our guide Alvaro, was outstanding - knowledgeable, humorous and safety conscious. The walk was stimulating, at a comfortable pace, with plenty of time to ask questions and learn. We spent 30 minutes in a small local cafe after we finished walking - a perfect end to a perfect walk.

As this was our first time walking the levadas in Madeira we'd been advised by others to go in an organised party. We struck gold with Madeira Free Spirit Walks booked via our hotel, The Cliff Bay., especially as there are so many tour companies to choose from. Our guide Susanna and driver George were both fantastic and made it a memorable day out. With lots of interesting information about Maderia and the levadas and ensuring an inclusive experience for a group who comprised several nationalitties. We stopped at excellent local cafes and were provided with rain jackets and walking sticks if required. George is an excellent driver, making navigating the steep roads (we thought the streets of San Francisco were hairy) of Madeira a doodle, especially in the wet. We were so delighted that we booked a further day's walk (the "25 Fountains") with the same pair of leaders and will book other walks with Maderia Free Spirit Walks next time we visit the island.

The guided hike with Alvero was perfect. The company drops you off with a guide at the starting point and they pick you up at the end of the tour. Alvero was extremely knowledgable about all of the plants along the way. He even brought bird feed so that when he called some of the local little birds, the guests could offer them some bits of food. The Ribeiro Frio to Portela was a good tour with some great views near the end, some tricky narrow sections along steep cliffs, and a much different climate than the south side of the island. We will certainly organize a walk with Free Spirits on the next visit to Madeira.

We were looked after very well. Our guide Susana, aided by Maria, was so friendly and knowledgeable about the walk, the history of Madeira plus the flora and fauna along the way. Best of all she was entertaining and imposed a lively humorous banter amongst our small group. We were a mixture of English and Germans and she spoke well in both our languages. Our driver was equally entertaining and altogether the friendly attitude of all at Madeira Free Spirit Walks makes them highly recommended. The walk itself was lovely amongst shade. It did get a bit narrow in parts and was very flat until leaving the levada itself at the end when it is a bit downhill - no problem but I mention this just so you know and as with all these walks a proper pair of walking boots is recommended. A walking pole might be useful but I didn’t take mine and didn’t miss it.
