Plaza Mayor

The name of the plaza has changed over time. It has been known as "Plaza del Arrabal", "Plaza de la Constitución", "Plaza Real", "Plaza de la República" and now "Plaza Mayor". These names reflect events, history and reign in Spanish history. "Plaza del Arrabal" was the original name of the present day "Plaza Mayor". The "Plaza del Arrabal" was once the site of the most popular marketplace until the end of 15th century. Following the Constitution of 1812, all major plazas in Spain were renamed "Plaza de la Constitución". It also held this name 1820 to 1823, 1833 to 1835, 1840 to 1843, and 1876 to 1922. When the Borbón king was restored in 1814, it became known as the "Plaza Real". In 1873, the name changed to "Plaza de la República". At the end of the Spanish Civil War the plaza received its present name of "Plaza Mayor".

Mercado San Miguel

More than 100 years have gone by since the Mercado de San Miguel opened its doors as a wholesale food market. Today, this historical building stands out as one of the world’s main gastronomic markets. It allows visitors to experience the essence and most significant flavors of every corner of Spain. Plaza de la Villa

It was one of the main medieval centers of Madrid, since three streets start from it, corresponding to the original layout of the city: Codo, Cordón and Madrid. On its outskirts are the main facades of three buildings of high historical-artistic value, built in different centuries. The oldest is the Casa y Torre de los Lujanes (15th century), in the Gothic-Mudejar style, located on the east side of the Plaza. This is now the office of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.

Royal Palace of Madrid

The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the King of Spain; However, the current kings do not live in it, but in the Zarzuela Palace, so it is used for state ceremonies and solemn acts. Now is when our visit really begins. Although Juvarra's original project was never carried out, the Royal Palace of Madrid can boast of being the largest inhabited palace in Europe. And we say inhabited because, although the Spanish Royal Family does not reside in it, it is still the place where they have their official residence. As we have commented previously, the building, whose works lasted until 1764 when Carlos III lived in it for the first time, is made up of 135,000 square meters and 3,418 rooms, also highlighting its 870 windows, 240 balconies or the 44 stairs it has. The comparisons are odious but, despite what many believe, the Palace of Versailles, near Paris, has 67,000 square meters, so that of Madrid surpasses it.

The tour guide was nice and knowledgeable but there was no understanding of having senior citizens with us. I had my parents (in their 80s) and my toddler with me, but the tour guide was walking and leading the group like we are all teenagers. It was so speedy that my parents and my child couldn’t keep up. I asked a few times but it seemed that people in the group didn’t like to walk slower to let us to get engaged.

Our guide Beatrice was very knowledgeable. Her english was very good and she was very generous with the amount of information shared with us. The length of the tour was perfect and provided us with a very good overview of the palace and the history of it.

The tour itself was very good, informative, and interesting. While we did have skip the line tickets we did still have to wait in line outside for about 20 minutes before entering the palace. I thought the start of the tour was a little disorganized as there were about 6 groups meeting at the same place and time. We all had to line up and one by one check in with the main office. This would have been ok if these were really small group tours, but each tour had about 25 people including ours. Once things got moving the tour itself was what I was expecting and hoped for

I signed up for small group tour with a maximum of 11 people and we had 20 in our group. We were treated and processed like a pack of sheep. The guide we had talked non stop flat out. Very disappointing. It would have been much better to stand in line to buy a ticket and get your own audio tour. The Royal Palace is magnificent but this tour detracted from our experience.

While the palace is worth seeing, our guide’s lack of fluency in English made the explanations hard to understand and chaotic, even if you had prepped for the visit.

We bought these tickets because the description said “small group”, no more than 11 people. There were 15 people. There was no reason to meet at their office as we had to walk to the palace. Took 10 minutes. We then had to stand in a security line. Should have the meeting point to be where the tour starts. They just wanted people to buy souvenirs from their shop. The audio was very poor. Our guide Beatrice was wonderful but she had to change everyone’s channel on our audio as we lost co tact with her. Won’t book with this company again
