Your Itinerary

Alter Markt

The Old Market is the center of the historic old town of Stralsund and was settled by German merchants in Stralow, which was then Slavonic, around 1200. On the south side, in addition to Nikolaikirche and Rathaus, a street of buildings can be seen in the foreground of the church.

Kniepertor

The Kniepertor, first mentioned in 1304, is the northernmost of the originally ten Stralsund city gates. It is the last surviving gate of the city fortifications next to the Kütertor. The rectangular building with its low tower was built over a pointed arch passage in the 15th century.

Kuetertor

Of the former ten city gates in the city wall of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, only the Kütertor is preserved in addition to the Kniepertor. It was mentioned in documents at the end of the 13th century, but rebuilt in 1446 and owes its name to the butchers who worked in this district and who processed the innards of animals.

Rathaus Stralsund

The most impressive ensemble of Gothic architecture with its magnificent facade was probably built around 1400 based on the town hall in Lübeck. The decorative facade was designed by the Swedish Nils Eosander. A two-aisled, arched arbor, the former court arbor, is located behind the ogival arcades on the ground floor. The so-called Löwensche Saal is located on the upper floor.

St. Nicholas' Church, Stralsund

The monumental St Nicholas’ Church at Alter Markt is the oldest of Stralsund’s three parish churches. First mentioned in 1276, it is dedicated to St Nicholas, the patron saint of mariners. Originally it was probably a simple hall with a tower.

Wulflamhaus

(Pass by)

The Wulflamhaus is a 14th century town house on the Old Market in Stralsund. It belongs to the north German brick Gothic style and is one of the best preserved late Gothic residential buildings in northern Germany. It's possible to explore on request.

German Oceanographic Museum

The German Oceanographic Museum, also called the Museum for Oceanography and Fisheries, Aquarium, in the Hanseatic town of Stralsund, is a museum in which maritime and oceanographic exhibitions are displayed. It is the most visited museum in North Germany. It's possible to see on request.

St. Marienkirche

(Pass by)

The third and largest city church, St. Marien, dominates the New Market in the southern part of the old town. This mighty brick building rises above the first parish church in the Neustadt, a hall church. This was destroyed in the 1380s by the collapse of its west tower. The new church was designed as a three-aisled basilica with a transept of three aisles and a chapel with chorus and was largely completed in the 15th century. The defiant, almost unadorned western building looks like a bulwark with only three monumental windows cut into its unstructured wall surfaces. It's possible to explore on request.

Museum fur Komische Kunst

(Pass by)

Since its opening in 2013, the "Museum of Comic Art" has ensured that its visitors are in a good mood and cheerful. With the various caricatures that are shown here on a total of 800 m² of exhibition space, no eye stays dry - because putting a smile on the face of visitors is what the operators of the bizarre want. It's possible to see on request.

Gorch Fock I

(Pass by)

The Gorch Fock I is the sister ship of the Gorch Fock, which was built 25 years later and is now in service as a sailing training ship for the German Navy. It was christened the pseudonym of the Low German writer Johann Kinau, born in 1899, from Finkenwerder near Hamburg, who lost his life in the Skagerrak battle in 1916. It's possible to see on request.

Stralsund Museum

(Pass by)

The oldest museum in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been breathing life into the history and heritage of the Hanseatic City of Stralsund and its environs since 1858 – whether at the Museum’s main site in the former Dominican Abbey of St Catherine or at its auxiliary locations, the Marine Museum and Historic House Museum. It's possible to see on request.
