We started in Amalfi. We are experienced hikers, in good shape, over 50. Using “easy” to mean a trail that is flat with occasional inclines and some steps, we would rate this hike as moderate, on the underside of difficult. The views recurrently were spectacular and worth the travel and time and costs to get there. When the bus at Amalfi was too full to take us up to the trail head, we recruited three other couples to split the taxi fare at 25 euros per couple. (plus the 3 euros apiece that we forfeited by not waiting an hour for the next bus.) Make sure you have water and food for a pleasant trail break at a scenic stop of your choice. We bought excellent big sandwiches at Caffetteria il Riterovo on the left in Bomerano before the trail head. (Two sandwiches and two pastries were 12 euros.) Lemonade is sold for two euros at a private home later on the trail. If you have hiking experience you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT NEED A GUIDE. Be mindful of your footing as there are some scrappy surfaces, but there are no areas that would pitch you to your death unless you are being reckless. My husband carried “proper” shoes in the backpack, but the weather was excellent and he comfortably did the entire trail in Birkenstocks. It would be dangerous to do this trail in rainy weather. Most people do east to west, but we saw no issue with going west to east (in terms of views) except that those doing so had to face a lot of opposing foot traffic and had a lot more uphill travel at the end. We saw out-of-shape people suffering on the trail. We also saw people starting in Positano in late afternoon which would place them walking the trail in the dark, which seemed insane to us. Rainfall at completion of the trail made us choose the bus instead of the thousand steps back down into Positano, but it would have been no problem in sunnier weather, despite fatigue. Between walking the steps of Positano the day before and then doing this trail, our legs were sore but not debilitated the next day.
