National Gallery of Art

Enter the National Gallery of Art and follow your guide through one of America’s best collections of artwork produced by Renaissance artists, French Impressionists, and great American painters. See works from Claude Monet, Raphael, Gilbert Stuart, and Edgar Degas, as well as more modern artists like Picasso, Pollock, Warhol, and O’Keefe, as you learn what’s really behind the creation of some of these pieces. Your guide will lead the way through the halls of the museum, telling stories, and stopping at famous works of art. Some pieces you’ll see on this tour include “Ginevra de’Benci” by Leonardo da Vinci, “Self Portrait” by Vincent Van Gogh, and “Woman with a Parasol” by Claude Monet. Listen as your guide fills you in on the techniques behind some of the paintings, as well as some of the history and scandals that happened because of them. You’ll also learn about the museum’s building which took just 100 years to transition from a nearly hollow building to the home of the US’s best art collections.

My wife and I truly enjoyed our tour of the National Gallery. At the beginning of the tour, we were concerned that our guide appeared to be skipping several pieces that seemed interesting to us. But in the end, you come to realize that the gallery is enormous. The only way for a guide to show off the entire gallery is to stop at a few highlights in the different sections. Afterward, there was plenty of time to go back to rooms after the tour that we wanted to explore further. I wanted to highly recommend our guide, Stephen Mead. You could tell he had a passion for the pieces in the gallery and was more than happy to show them off for us. Also, I think he was able to adapt to showing us the pieces that we would be interested in seeing. Prior to my visit, I was wondering whether or not it was worth it to pay for a guide to a free museum. Having completed the tour, I am positive that without a guide I would not have seen more than half of the exhibits and would have missed the insight of the artists that a guide could provide. I don't think I would have appreciated the gallery as much as I do now and look forward to returning. If you love art, be ready to be amazed at not only the quantity and quality of the pieces but also the unbelievable access you can get to them. The National Gallery and the Walking tour is something my wife and I will remember fondly for years to come.

Annemarie greeted us with a smile, she was interested in what brought us to the museum and immediately started a great tour . Annemarie was professional, knows about the museum, its history and of course shared with us her knowledge of the paintings we saw. Annemarie included insights that relate to us now as well as historical facts that gave depth to the art. Often Annemarie enhanced our tour with additional pictures from her iPad, she was very polite and appropriate with other groups and led us smoothly through crowded areas. We left the tour enriched and eager to return.

My wife and I booked this tour and ended up being only participants. That was lucky for us as it gave us more direct communication with our guide Annemarie. We definitely felt it was worth it to do this tour as Annemarie made sure we hit all the highlights. She was able to speak in detail about each piece from Dutch Masters to more modern art. Very informative and the time flew by. Would highly recommend this tour.
