Pearl Harbor National Memorial

We begin at historic Pearl Harbor where you will experience firsthand the earth-shattering events that catapulted the U.S. into World War II. Join us at the USS Arizona Memorial, a deeply moving and emotional experience where you will learn about the 1,177 seamen who perished when their battleship was sunk during the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. You’ll witness the attack in a 23-minute documentary and then cross the harbor to the Memorial in a Navy vessel. At the Memorial, pay your respects to the heroes whose names are etched in marble in the Shrine Room. Look into the water and note the oil droplets – “The Black Tears of the Arizona” – that continue to escape the sunken battleship and rise to the harbor surface. Back at Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, there will be time to visit the WWII museum exhibits and the bookshop.

My extended family and I are on a first time ever trip to Hawaii, specifically Kauai. We wanted a day trip to Oahu for Pearl Harbor. We selected our tour to be Pearl Harbor, the Dole Plantation and the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) through Viator. Our first encounter with Aloha Sunshine Tours (AST) was through a confused reservation on Viator. They contacted me directly to resolve the botched reservation. They were friendly, helpful and efficient. We rebooked directly with AST and looked forward to a great day. Pearl Harbor is run by the Park Service and the Navy. The Arizona Memorial is the most visited tourist destination on Oahu. AST got us there efficiently and led us to the visitor scheduling kiosk. With their coaching, I got the group signed up for a time slot. With less than effective coaching, I also got the group un-signed up. Relatively minor glitch, it just pushed us down the queue. As we waited for the text with our time slot, I got anxious about our scheduled pickup with AST. I called the AST office and asked them to contact our guide, Rick, and let him know. The office seemed unaware of the text message time slot system. I found this very disconcerting; these guys were supposed to be the experts on the tour, not me. Anyway, we got to the Memorial (not to be missed) but were under schedule pressure to meet the pickup. And it was schedule pressure for the rest of the day. Rick was courteous and efficient, but not the most personable tour guide we’ve ever had. His greatest attribute was herding the cats from stop to stop maintaining his schedule. We didn’t understand Oahu geography; Pearl and the PCC are at opposite ends of the island. We did get a drive-by (fly-by) of the famous north shore beaches, but barely saw them as we blew by. We spent a lot of time on the bus. Let’s talk schedule and then bus. We had expected three stops and an opportunity to purchase lunch. We expected a reasonable duration at PCC. There were extra stops including a tourist fruit stand in the middle of nowhere (not worth it) and a family macadamia farm (pretty nice) that seemed to be schedule and contractual obligations of AST to deliver potential customers. In many ways the Dole Plantation stop was similar, but far nicer. Dole Plantation is not really a plantation but an expanded tourist shop. There was also a stop at the Pali Overlook (well worth it). But the overall effect was constant pressure to move on. That significantly reduced our time at any stop with the worst impact at PCC. PCC was well worth the little time we were permitted there. (As an aside: AST knew they were taking us there and how many people. They could have pre-arranged the ticketing and saved us the waiting time.) Rick kept us moving. Even lunch was rushed as we ate among the passengers of all the other tour buses. At no stop were we comfortable with allotted time. Bus 119 was probably not an official antique but looked and behaved as one. The company decals were fading and peeling. The bus was virtually full on the hottest day of the year so far and the a/c barely worked. It was uncomfortable and unfortunately long. Because we were off Oahu, we needed a tour company to get us to Oahu for the day. We admit we were part of the problem because we didn’t understand the geography. But AST was responsible for our day. The schedule and conditions and coordination were their responsibility. Overall, do Pearl Harbor, PCC and the Pali Overlook. You can skip the rest.
