Your Itinerary

Teatro Massimo

The opera teathre of Palermo is famous as the location of the most dramatic scene of The Godfather III. Anyway, this monument is also a symbol of the rebirth of the city after decades of Mafia violence.

Wall of legality

The longest wall painting in Italy (70 meters long) represents some of the most known mafia victims and is part of an urban renovation project. It is both the chance to become familiar with the victims' faces and to shoot some good pictures!

Capo Street Market

(Pass by)

The colorful old open-air market is the perfect place to understand better the relationship between the Mafia and shopkeepers while walking through one of the most interesting and loud areas of the city.

Palazzo di Giustizia

Piazza della Memoria, by the Palerm Court House, is a Memorial dedicated to judges and prosecutors killed by the Mafia.

Cattedrale di Palermo

In front of the spectacular Arab-Norman Cathedral, the guide will talk about the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Mafia

Cappadonia Gelati

Along the Cassaro, you will come across with an orange sticker on their windows. Their owners - like this famous gelato place - have said NO to paying the extortion racket, or ‘pizzo’, and have joined the mafia-free critical consumption campaign promoted by the grassroots movement Addiopizzo. You too have the chance to stop and support them with some “good” shopping!

Palazzo Pretorio, Municipio di Palermo

The City Hall of Palermo has been the seat of corrupted politicians, as well as of the ones who have been fighting against the Mafia.

Our guide, Valeria, was well-informed on the subject. As a native of Palermo we appreciated her perspective. The architectural feature of the buildings near the courts having decreasing imperfections from one end to the wings of freedom on the other especially highlight the struggles and progress of Sicilians. Our guide brought sincere passion to the subject and provided a comprehensive overview of the many aspects of the anti-Mafia efforts. Our tour had extra meaning being that it was on the 23 of May.

It was good to hear about the way Sicily has been shaped and affected by the mafia. So tragic to hear about how many deaths and lives changed due to the mafia. Also confirmed past and present involvement of prominent figures yet today.

Our guide Laura was fabulous from start to finish. She gave us all a great insight into the Sicilian mafia. The tour went for three hours and we certainly learnt a lot thanks to Laura who was so knowledgeable.

If we could give this tour 6 stars we would. The story of the Mafia was told passionately. It is unlike any other tour we have ever done.

A great way to get beyond superficial tourism. The story of citizen challenges to Palermo's historically entrenched Mafia is much more meaningful when you hear it through local people who know their history. As a first time visitor to Sicily I was shocked to see "Godfather" movie trinkets are still for sale everywhere. If you want to understand the history of organized crime without Hollywood romance, this is for you. Our guide was smart, funny and passionate about the topic.

Very informative and interesting. Guide was very engaging. Great insight into the community and the Mafia past and present.

Heard of mafia life on the TV & the glamorisation of it by the film's but the tour guide Sophia (who was excellent in her role) brought a very real perspective on the horrendous impact on everyone's lives including the children living in Sicily over the decades & how it still has a resonating impact to this day. She brought to life the heroes that stood up against the mafia & the cost to their lives for doing it. The tour gave a real insight to how Sicilians courage & desire for moral change against corruption to have freedom to live & right to earn their money without having to loose their earnings to a corrupt & immoral force.

Informative and at a sophisticated level. Provided a multi-dimensional portrayal of how and why the mafia so thoroughly dominated Sicily and how collective action by ordinary citizens forced church and state to take actions.

A really worthwhile tour, and a unique one because it addresses the difficult recent past of Sicily not the antiquarian distant past or simply enjoyable food and sights, the pleasant tourist stuff. The tour is conceptual and political as much as it is sightseeing. The guide was terrific (she spoke excellent English as well as German and welcomed questions enthusiastically and with real pleasure in addressing we foreigners' different perspectives). She took us to sites (French Historians would call them "lieux de memoire") which were places that represented important institutions (Palermo Cathedral, Palace of Justice, the Sepulcre of Sicilian heroes in the Chiesa di San Domenico (I think), the Wall of the Just, Stores that openly display the No mafia organization's sign saying we don't pay "pizzo", a house where a Mafia assassin once hid out and that was painted over by anti-Mafia activists while he was in it, etc) which was very moving but the very best part of the tour was simply hearing an I'm guessing late 20s-30ish year-old Palermitan recount her own history as an anti-Mafia activist in the organization that created this tour and has its own museum, weaving what we saw into the story and emotions aroused in her of fighting the Mafia. You will see Palermo differently but more fondly after this tour. It demonstrates that the people of Palermo fought the Mafia collectively and have had much success in reducing its power and influence over the last 30 years. I also listened to the tour with a different guide while I was waiting for ours to begin, it was for Italian tourists. He was just as impassioned and eloquent on what fighting the Mafia meant to him and his group.

Linda was a wonderful tour guide. She managed our group of 19 people professionally and with good humour. She selected quieter spots to tell us eye opening stories as we walked around the centre of Palermo. A well recommended tour.
