Thursday is market day in Alberobello so we were lucky to be able to examine taste and choose a variety of fresh produce that our delightful host Maria magically helped us turn into an authentic local feast in her charmingly trullo - even if our own pitiful attempts to emulate her orecchiette-making skills leave plenty of room for improvement!

This was such a unique and wonderful experience. You are invited into Maria's home which is an trulli built in the 14th century. The setting is amazing, but Maria is even better. She, and her young translator, took us to a small store (not a outdoor market) to select the cheeses we would use in the meal. We then went back to her home, where her husband was in the door greeting the tourist that come to take pictures of their stunning home. In her kitchen, she showed us how to make her amazing sauce, focaccia (traditional and onion) and panzerotti then taught us how to make orecchiette and tiramisu. We ended having an amazing meal. I think it is important to stress you are in someone's home. You meet her husband and neighbors stop by. It is a truly authentic experience. For an afternoon, you are part of her family and it is joyous.
