Pedro I (1356-67), with the function of containing the assaults of pirates and corsairs, usually from North Africa. Taken together in the period of the Philippine dynasty, its relevance is demonstrated by the fact that the very king D. Philip I (1580-1598) personally witnessed, in 1582, the launching of the foundation stone of the new fortification, with the architect and engineer Italian military officer Filippo Terzi (1520-1597). In the XVIII century the Chapel in its interior acquired its coat of tiles, signed by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes (1736). During the Pombaline consulate (1750-1777) it would not have been immune to the 1755 earthquake and was used as the School of Gunners.
