Capela Das Aparicoes

The Capelinha, in the heart of the present Shrine of Fatima, was built by the people in 1919, at the request of Our Lady during one of the apparitions. The first mass was celebrated here in 1921. Although with some alterations, due to conservation and maintenance works in recent years, the small chapel retains the simple architecture of a popular hermitage. The image of Our Lady marks the place of the holm oak where the shepherds had the apparitions. The great holm oak that was there was disappearing, carried branch by branch, by the faithful. This was where the little shepherds came to pray the rosary, accompanied by other believers.

Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima

In it are buried the three shepherds - Francisco, Jacinta and Sister Lucy. The 14 side altars represent the mysteries of the Rosary, the 15th. Mystery is represented in the vault of the chancel, where one sees in stone the Holy Trinity crowning the Blessed Virgin. In front of this basilica was built an altar where the masses with more pilgrims are usually celebrated.

Basilica of the Holy Trinity

Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the opening of this space took place in 2007. The building was necessary because the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary could no longer accommodate so many pilgrims. In addition to these, other points worth visiting in the Shrine of Fatima are the houses of the shepherds, in the village of Aljustrel, a piece of the Berlin Wall situated next to the chapel (symbol at the end of Communism, one of the secrets of Fatima) and the Via Sacra - one of the most popular routes in Fatima, which leads pilgrims through the 14 chapels that represent the different stations of the Passion of Christ.

Monastery of Alcobaca

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this imposing monastery is one of the most impressive and beautiful testimonies of Cister architecture in all of Europe. The Abbey's Charter of Foundation dates from April 8, 1153 and, despite its almost 900 years, keeps all medieval dependencies intact. Its church is the first and largest in primitive Gothic style, built in Portugal during the Middle Ages.

Batalha Monastery

The Santa Maria da Vitória Monastery or popularly known as Batalha Monastery is that kind of place where history, beauty and religion come together. The monastery was built at the behest of King D. João I after the famous battle of Aljubarrota where the King, his CONDESTABLE Nuno Alvares Pereira and approximately 7000 men beat the troops of Castile with approximately 30,000 men. After the victory, D. João Mestre de Avis completely expels the Castilians of Portugal and ends the conflict of years. Particularly I find this place fantastic and I do not remember once I was in Portugal and did not visit the monastery. Each visit is a different sensation and a new experience.

Nazare

The Shrine of Our Lady of Nazareth, located in Sítio da Nazaré. Dating back to the fourteenth century, when King Fernando came on pilgrimage to the Lady of Nazareth, the construction of the present Shrine. Inside is the Holy Image of Our Lady of Nazareth, a Black Virgin, carved in wood, brought from Merida to this Site in the year 711. The spread of the legend and worship of the Lady of Nazareth and the flow pilgrims, helped to affirm the Sanctuary of the Site as one of the most important in the national context during modern times. This made possible the artistic enhancement of the Sanctuary, which takes place with special vigor during the eighteenth century, with the acquisition of works of high quality and which are still national references today. The affirmation of the Sanctuary owes much to the protection of fishermen.

Castelo de Obidos

The Óbidos castle, which mixes elements of the Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Baroque styles, predates the Portuguese nationality. It is referred to in 1153 documents and was conquered in 1148 by D. Afonso Henriques after the conquests of Santarém and Lisbon. One tradition reveals the obidenses to be "moles" because there is a large network of tunnels under the walls to obtain the secret supply of the inhabitants.

We traveled with a small group and our priest. We were able to get a private chapel for a private mass. Except for the bad day for weather, our guide showed us a grand time with all the other sites and a wonderful lunch.
