Eremo delle Carceri

The Eremo is a peaceful, humble and solitary spot, nestled in the woods where Francis and his followers dwelled in caves as hermits. The stunning view of the green valley and the surrounding hills you can enjoy from the little cloister is just amazing!

San Damiano

In this simple, silent and inspiring place Francis composed the Canticle of the Creatures, the famous Crucifix of Saint Damien asked Him to repair the Church which was falling into ruin and Saint Clare spent her spiritual life with her companions.

Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli

The huge Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels, which was built around the tiny Porziuncola Chapel, is the place where Francis prayed with His Friars and died. This is also where the thorns dropped off the roses where Francis threw himself to fight a temptation.

In our first visit to Assisi, my wife and I hired Maura Baldoni to give us a private tour of “Surroundings of Assisi: in the Footsteps of Saint Francis” which included Santa Maria degli Angeli Basilica, San Damiano Church and Eremo delle Carceri. I had read quite a bit about St. Francis before the trip, but still, I learned a lot from Maura. Her story gave us a deeper understanding of the role these (beautiful) places played in the lives of St. Francis and St. Claire. We also learned about Maura, her family, and the Italian culture. The tour started at 9 AM and ended at noon just like she had described. Maura speaks English fluently and we had no problem understanding her. Since we didn’t have a car, she negotiated the taxis for us. If there’s any regret, it is that we forgot to take pictures at San Damiano 😃Otherwise, we enjoyed the tour and would gladly recommend it to others! PS: I found Maura through internet search, and I contacted her by email two months before our trip. I loved her answer when I asked her about the cancellation policy: “There’s no cancellation policy. I trust that you will come.” So simple 😃

Maura was amazing! From the natural beauty of the Eremo delle Carceri to the Porziuncola at Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, Maura’s passion, knowledge, and humor shined through. Not only that, but she organized the transportation for the day, so we didn’t have to lift a finger during the entire tour. A tour with Maura is like going on a trip with a good friend. My wife and I had an excellent experience with our guide Maura. This tour took us outside of the heart Assisi into the countryside to the more modest but Aldo more real places where St Francis and St Clare had some of their salient experiences. Maura was in regular touch with us before the tour, and had made a suggestion to change the date to a Monday, which turned out to be excellent as the sites were very much less crowded and we could take our time. She had a very deep knowledge of the history and context of their lives and these sites. It was a perfect counterpoint to the guided tour we had in Assisi proper when we arrived, that was more focused on the city and the basilicas. Highly recommend Maura and this tour!

Maura is a gem. I traveled with my husband and our friend to beautiful Umbria. Maura was our guide in Spello, Assisi and Perugia. She made our trip so much richer with her knowledge and passion for her region. She provided us with information and stories on Umbria’s history, culture, people and food. Her knowledge of Umbria is encyclopedic. Her delivery is warm and engaging. Maura is professional, authentic, humble, funny, and kind. She’s the real deal and a beautiful person- inside and out.
