We will cross the Ega Valley that begins at Bolzano and runs eastward between the Rosengarten and the Latemar mountains. This road was built in 1895 when the territory was part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. Part of the route is located in a canyon carved by the river Ega. We will stop at Carezza Lake, the most beautiful lake of the Dolomites: 30 minutes of staying with a walk around the lake if you want.

Passo di Costalunga

(Pass by)

Then we will arrive to Costalunga Pass. Near the Pass we will see the historical “Grand Hotel Carezza”, built in 1893, the first luxury hotel in the Dolomites which hosted very important guests like the Empress Sissi, Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie.

Fassa Valley

(Pass by)

From the Costalunga Pass we will reach the Fassa Valley in Trentino: we will pass through the towns of Vigo di Fassa and Canazei to arrive under the imposing peaks of the Sella Group.

Sass Pordoi

From here begins a long series of 27 hairpins bends (switchbacks) that will lead us to the famous Pordoi Pass at an altitude of 2.239 meters above sea level. One hour of staying if you decide to arrive with the cable car to Sass Pordoi (altitude of 2950 meters: the cable car is open from late May until mid-October and from Christmas to Easter).

Admission Not Included

Passo Sella

From the Pordoi Pass we return back a few kilometers to reach the Sella Pass: here the landscape is really impressive with the Sella vertical walls that stand right in front of us .... From the Sella Pass we can admire the Marmolada glacier (3,343 m) and the majestic Sassolungo (3,181 m), the most famous mountain in Gardena Valley: 10 minutes stop for photos.

Ortisei

Such an incredible day trip. Alessandro is one of the best tour guides I’ve ever experienced. Great communication, knowledgeable, and really cared that we had a good day. We have been recommending him to all our friends and family.

Alessandro was very easy to deal with. He called me on whats app several times to discuss our trip. His driver was waiting for us at the Venice airport to pick us up and take us to our hotel. He also dropped us at the Bolzano airport when we left. Even if you have your own car I do not think you would want to drive yourself. He have us a comprehensive tour of the eastern and western Dolomites. We were with him for 2 full days on 2 different tours We had a very good time and felt as if we saw a lot. The only 2 negatives were as follows. He does not take credit cards and only takes euros in cash. However his fees were the most reasonable for the time of any agencies I contacted. Unlike other guides we had he does not give continued commentary but rather did better when we asked frequent questions. I would recommend him.

We had the best experience visiting the Dolomites! Alex knows so much and his love for the mountains shines through in his tour. It is worth every penny!

We spent 6 fantastic hours with Alesandro driving around and visiting the dolomites. This was our fist excursion to the south Tyrol area and we loved it! It was overcast and snowing on our tour but that did not bother us (we are used to the snow and cold). We stopped at some key spots to view the lakes and mountains as well as some of the mountain towns. Alessandro's knowledge of the area is amazing and we could not have asked for a better guide! We highly recommend this tour.

The changeable weather in May brought snow to the high area we were meant to see. Guide Alessandro gave us the option to cancel or do a low country tour which we did. A thoroughly enjoyable day.

Alessandro is a lovely person who took four of us on kms of switchback roads, through the passes talking about this beloved area he calls home. We met him at a local hotel by the train station and his timing was impeccable. The weather was not in our favour and we didn't see much of the dolomites but we managed to see glimpses of them. This is an expensive tour and to that end it would be of benefit if you did this tour on a clear day (you can cancel up to a certain point), but we had a timeline and wanted to see what we could see. Alessandro shared lots of information along the way and added lots to the trip.

Alessandro Scacchetti (Alex) really knows the Dolomites. We thought of renting a car and trying to see them ourselves, but paying him was worth every euro and more! He LOVES these mountains, and knows where to go to see them, explain the history and geography, and get fantastic photos. If you look at personalized or private tours on Viator, or ToursbyLocals and read the reviews, you are likely to see it is Alex that did the tours. ItalyDolomites is his personal website so go there to make arrangements and contact him. My wife and I went when there were covid restrictions in Italy and we were concerned about spending the day with strangers. He gave us a private tour, let us choose where to go and how long to spend, knowing that I wanted the chance to take some great photos. He did not disappoint. We took great lake pictures, took the cable car (funivia) at Sass Pordoi to get spectacular views of the mountains and the valleys, ate lunch and toured the gorgeous town of Ortisei in Val Gardena, and ended with the Val di Funes for a must have photo. His English is excellent, and he is outgoing and a delight to be with. We spent the day with him and the time passed quickly as every back road we took had beautiful views. He has spent his life with these mountains and knows exactly where to go and how to get there. He is a fantastic guide. Seeing the mountains is one thing; sharing his passion for them made it exceptional.

Alex was a wonderful guide in this stunning part of Italy. He knew the best places to take us to maximize our time and was extremely knowledgeable about the history and facts of the region. We were fortunate to have picked the perfect day for our tour with out a cloud in the sky. I cannot recommend him enough. He made my wife and I feel like family and took great care of us. You need to plan ahead if coming to Bolzano and get him booked!!

My wife and I had Alessandro arrange three tours, one on the Dolomites Western Road with him, a transfer from Bolzano to Lake Misurina and a transfer from Lake Misurina to Venice. The best was a tour with him. He has great energy and happily shared his expertise and the surroundings were beautiful “topped off” by a cable car trip from 7,000 to 10,000 ft where we could spend more than an hour in 360 degree breathtaking beauty. In the other trips necessary transfers became comfortable sightseeing opportunities. Couldn’t be better. If you are going to the Dolomites go with Alessandro. Jan and Jerry
