Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli

The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is located 4 km from Assisi. Inside the Basilica there is the Porziuncola Chapel; the place most loved by Saint Francis and where God granted him special graces. Initially, the Porziuncola was an ancient chapel, surrounded by a small portion of forest (hence perhaps the name) belonging to the Benedictines of the Monastery of S. Benedetto del Monte Subasio. Having remained abandoned for a long time, it was restored by Francesco who rented it from Abbot Teobaldo. After the death of the Saint, some permanent buildings arose around the church: the friars' choir, various small oratories and then a small convent. In the second half of the 1500s Pius V ordered the construction of a large basilica that would enclose and protect the Porziuncola and welcome the crowds of pilgrims who continually flocked there.

Basilica di Santa Chiara

The Basilica of Santa Chiara is a religious building, built in neo-Romanesque style, located in Assisi. The basilica is among the most famous in Italy and one of the most beautiful in Umbria. The church marks not only the historic center of the city but also a significant place from an artistic and cultural point of view. The Basilica of Santa Chiara was built by the Benedictine monks, who had the desire to honor Santa Chiara, born Agnese in 1194 and died on 13 September 1253. Currently, together with the Porziuncola, the Eremo delle Carceri, the Chiesa Nuova and the Basilica of San Damiano, the Cathedral of San Rufino and obviously the Basilica of San Francesco, is one of the centers where the pilgrimage to Assisi is concentrated.

Pinacoteca Comunale Palazzo Vallemani

Splendid baroque residence with frescoed vaults at the beginning of the seventeenth century by Umbrian and Tuscan painters. Is the Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi, inside they are a conspicuous group of medieval and Renaissance frescoes.

Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d'Assisi

The Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi, the place that has preserved the mortal remains of the seraphic saint since 1230, is one of the most important places of worship in Italy and the world. In 2000, the basilica was included in the UNESCO world heritage list. The first stone of the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi was laid on 16 July 1228, just two days after Francis' death and the day after his proclamation as a saint by Pope Gregory IX. According to tradition, it was Francis himself who indicated exactly the place where he wished to be buried. The church represents one of the cornerstones of the spread of Gothic in Italy. In addition to being the burial place of Saint Francis, it assumed fundamental importance for the papacy, which saw the Franciscan order as a great ally for strengthening ties with the humblest and most popular classes. The construction of the basilica was started in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX and then consecrated in 1253 by Pope Innocent IV.

Da Cecco

Free time for lunch tasting the tipical localfood and wine , shopping and walking. In the afternoon the tour continues to Orvieto, where you can admire the magnificence of its Gothic Cathedral.

Duomo di Orvieto

The Dome of Orvieto is one of the most beautiful Italian cathedral, a masterpiece of the gothic architecture of the center of Italy. The magnificent building dominates the bluff up which Orvieto is located thanks to its size. In particular, the splendour of its facade is known all over the word, with its towers that reach a height of about 53 meters. Do not to forget the interior of the Dome, with wonderful decorations and frescoes made by some of the most great painters of the past, among which the famous Giudizio Universale of Luca Signorelli.

Orvieto

Explore Orvieto, one of the oldest cities in Italy, owes its origins to the Etruscan civilization: the first settlements date back to the 9th century BC. and they located themselves inside the tufaceous caves created in the massif on which the Umbrian town currently stands. Although Orvieto's fame is deeply intertwined with that of its magnificent cathedral, the city offers numerous historical-artistic ideas and itineraries, precisely by virtue of its ancient origins. Furthermore, perched on a cliff, Orvieto offers truly splendid panoramic views.
