The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is located 4 km from Assisi. After the death of the Saint, some permanent buildings arose around the church: the friars' choir, various small oratories and then a small convent. In the second half of the 1500s Pius V ordered the construction of a large basilica that would enclose and protect the Porziuncola and welcome the crowds of pilgrims who continually flocked there.
