Chiesa di San Francesco d’Assisi

We stop at the medieval Church of San Francesco. If you are interested, it is possible to enter and visit the interior of the church. This is the first of many beautiful medieval churches with remarkable facades that we see as we pedal through town.

Giardino Scotto

It is a short distance to the Arno River, the longest and most important river of Tuscany. It runs through the town, dividing it into two. As we cycle the streets alongside the Arno, there are many splendid palazzos to admire. Near Giardino Scotto, a public park, we cross the river and continue toward the suggestive Church of Santo Sepolcro, constructed in the Middle Ages by the Knights of Malta formerly known as the Knights Hospitaller. The guide can relate many details regarding this ancient superpower of Pisa.

Statua di Cosimo I de' Medici

We double back using the bridge Ponte di Mezzo and head to an area of Pisa off the beaten track, the Mercato delle Vettovaglie, the fresh produce and food market. There are also cafes, and pubs where university students like to eat, drink an socialize. It is possible, upon request, to taste typical local products and excellent Tuscan wines, or stop to taste the best gelato in town. As the tour draws to a close, we visit Piazza dei Cavalieri, where the most prestigious Italian university, Scuola Normale Superiore, is located.
