Chateau et Remparts de la Cite de Carcassonne

KNOW THE CASTLE AND THE REPARTS OF THE CITY OF CARCASSONNE A key city in the formation of the national territory. Power center of the counts of Carcassonne then of the famous Trencavel family in the 12th century, it became, following the Albigensian crusade (1209-1229) where the royal forces seized Carcassonne, accused of complicity with the Cathars, a place royal fortress governed by a seneschal. It guarantees the border between France and Aragon until the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. One of the largest restoration projects in Europe. In the 19th century, the city was on the verge of demolition and served as a stone quarry. For more than 50 years (from 1853 to 1911), Viollet-le-Duc and his successor Paul Boeswillwald gave it back its medieval appearance: destruction of parasitic constructions between the two enclosures, gray lauze roofing of the towers and restoration of the decorations, the hourds are undertaken. In the 1960s, the Gallo-Roman towers were topped with tiles.
