Your Itinerary

Bolgheri

Meet with your driver guide in Santa Maria Novella Square at approx. 8am. After a short introduction of the day, you will start heading towards the so called "coast of the Etruscans". We will first visit the Gulf of Baratti, one of the nicest places along the Tuscan coast, where you will appreciate the beauty of the Mediterranean sea. Here there was one of the most important cities of the Etruscans, Populonia. Before lunch we will go to the lovely village of Bolgheri, a charming town famous for its wines, first of all the Sassicaia, considered to be one of the best Super Tuscan wines of Tuscany. In this wine area, they successfully combine tradition with modern technology and new grapes. At lunch time we will take you to a local winery for a great wine and food experience, where you can have the possibility to taste Super Tuscan wines and have a light lunch at the estate. Next we'll move on to Volterra, one of the oldest Italian towns, built by the Etruscan people in the VII century BC, nowadays a charming medieval hill town also known for the production of alabaster (and the setting of the "Twilight" movie). Here you will have free time to stroll around the medieval narrow streets on your own, where you can breathe centuries of history, visit the traditional shops with the alabaster hand-made crafts, or visit the archeological museum and the Roman theatre. At about 5:00pm we will start driving back to Florence, arriving at approx. 6pm.

We LOVED our driver/tour guide, Gianni. He was a wealth of information and helped to make the day informative and fun! Gianni went the extra mile to make sure we were well taken care of and had everything we wanted out of the experience plus more.

I just return from this trip and highly recommend it. We got to see several lovely smaller out-of-the-way towns with lots of history, enjoyed some fabulous wine, and had a very nice lunch. The driver, Jonathan, was fantastic and very conversational and made the trip a perfect day. The only downside was the meeting point to start the trip. They need to have a designated point in the Piazza to where to meet or put up a sign or a flag or something.

We took this tour the next day after we took a typical large group bus tour. The difference was huge! We were lucky - there were only two of us for this tour in a minivan. Jonathan was great and adjusted itinerary to our taste. We could walk some places at our pace. We saw a small winery and had lunch there, just two of us. The experience was a lot different that in a large group and totally worth the premium. I liked Volterra the best. It was much less crowded than Siena or San Gimignano, but pretty large and interesting. Jonathan told us a lot about Tuscany, Italian countryside and life in Italy in general. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip.

I booked this tour because my mother and I wanted to see a typical Tuscan village and visit some of the less touristy towns of Tuscany! The tour company, Tuscan Travellers, asked us well in advance how we would like to spend our day visiting as many cities as possible or including a visit to a winery. The towns that are included in this tour are simply charming. During November, we felt like we were the only tourists there! Our day began in the Estruscan town of Volterra a medieval hill town. We enjoyed strolling around the medieval narrow streets, breathing in centuries of history, with views of a Roman amphitheater and rolling Tuscan hillsides. In the afternoon, we made stops in Suvereto, Populonia and Bolgheri. These cities are all located along the Mediterranean sea and they are as precious as they are small. Perhaps the highlight of our day was our lunch stop at the Bulichella Winery. The vineyards extend all the way to Montepeloso and the sea the tour was very interesting and afterwards a lovely three course tasting and lunch was included. Our driver, Jonathan, was courteous, engaging and very dedicated to ensuring we enjoyed the day.

We had a small tour (3 of us) to Siena and San Gimignano. Jonathan promptly picked us up at our appointed and time and proceed to take us on an adventure of cities. Jonathan was knowledgeable about the area, and the two cities we went to. He also gave us a lot of information about Italy. He stopped often if we wanted to take photos of some of the incredible countryside we saw. Jonathan was funny, charming, smart and kept us laughing and having a good time all day. He made this tour fantastic, we had a really good time with him.

I booked this tour because I wanted to get out of the hustle and bustle of Florence and see a typical Tuscan village and of course drink some of the finest wines of the world from Bolgheriwhich I did!. We visited the little town of Suvereto and it was simply charming. Very clean and well maintained with restaurants, shopping and friendly Tuscan villagers. From there we visited the Guild del Re vineyard and received the usual wine tour much like what you get in Napa/Sonoma. Then came the tastings with a food presentation that was so delicious. Very good wine to go with the very good foodand Im a wine snob or so Im told. Next we then went to Bolgheri, home of Sassicaia and many other great wines. So while my wife went shopping I plopped down to taste wine at Enoteca Tognoni. Disappointed in some wines like the Sassicaia and Ornellaia but blown away by the Messoriomerlot. Oh my it was delicious. It was a long day but it never felt long because of our tour guide Jonathon. We were in Italy, Croatia, Sicily and Montenegro for 2 and a half weeks and by far, not even close, Jonathon was the best tour guide we had and we had several. His English and knowledge of the region made it easy and interesting. Not once did we ever have that silent awkward moment. We talked and talked and laughed like we were close friends. One note on this day trip. If you want to visit the wine vineyards of Bolgheri you need to make that clear well in advance with Jonathon so he can make the arrangements. Most all require in advance booking and some can take up to 3 hours which eat in to the day. So going to Enoteca Tognoni simplified that. It was a great day made even better because of Jonathon. Ciao

Jonathan was a fantastic tour guide. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. I highly recommend this tour especially if you can get Jonathan as your guide. The day was slow paced and relaxed. We visited a few towns and especially enjoyed Volterra. The visit to the winery was the highlight of the trip. The wine and food were absolutely fantastic!
