Our group of 8 had the MOST fun with Iker! We first enjoyed a town walking tour with a great mix of history & fun tales. We then visited the market to get food before entering the gastronomie club for wines, appetizers & a fabulous meal prepared by Iker! He had prepped some foods the day before, so we entered the club to a beautiful table, appetizers & lovely wines. We all SO enjoyed the day, local foods, his fresh tuna, but most especially charming Iker! All agreed it was a SPECIAL day! Def 5 stars!!

We had a fantastic San Sebastian tour of the old town and a private cooking class. Iker led us through the old town explaining Basque and San Sebastian history and culture that concluded with a fun shopping experience. The olive and oil tasting was a highlight. Then Chief Ben instructed us on various pinchos and a beautiful clam and monkfish dish with a tasty pastry to finish the night. This experience was one of the best events of our two-week time in Spain. Highly recommend!!!

This was the most interesting, engaging and enjoyable evening. The historical background of these clubs in conjunction with the personal interaction and meal with your guide is a unique opportunity to delve into the Basque culture. We cancelled a Michelin star restaurant to book this private tour for two and have no regrets. We got so much more out of it than we would have in a classy restaurant.

Iker was fabulous! He is very knowledgeable about the region, it’s history and it’s food. After a tour of the area he prepared us a delicious lunch. He was personable, thoughtful and considerate of our needs. It was as if we were spending the day with a friend.

The highlight of our time in San Sebastián / Donestia was the gastronomy tour and men’s cooking club with Iker. His passion for the city and what makes it unique is evident from the start. Iker shared the culture of the city through both its rich history and its abundant and fresh foods. He is an expert at knowing when and where to buy the best produce, meats and spices. And his preparation demonstrates a pure love of cooking for and with people. This tour felt very personal and incredibly special for both my partner and I and will long be remembered.

Our tour was a shopping and cooking experience at a San Sebastián gastronomic society club with a local chef. Even that amazing first sentence does not begin to describe how fantastic our day was! Ben, a local professional chef with deep knowledge of local history, culture, and food traditions, met us (me and my wife...the only two people on the tour that day) at our hotel. We walked to the San Martin market and visited a few local shops for chorizo, iberico jamon, olives, and some produce for our lunch. Ben gave us historical context about the products as well a primer on broader Basque history and cuisine as we stopped by the stands. It was colorful and informative. We also bought some saffron and paprika from one of the vendors...not due any push or hustle from our guide, but just a good opportunity to pick up some top end products as souvenirs. We then walked to a gastronomic club in the Old Town where Ben was a member, one of 200 plus private cooking and cultural clubs in San Sebastián. The club, built into the walls of the city, was reeking with charm and history. From the wooden dining rooms with pictures of members in traditional Basque dress for holiday parades to the former military tunnelways now used as wine cellars, the whole place was a real slice of Basque life and history. After touring the club itself, we went to work in the club's commercial kitchen where Ben had already prepped a few additional items for us to cook. We made a number of traditional pintxos. Each one was super tasty, with the simplicity of preparation and high quality of the local ingredients shining through. We also made a small pantxineta, a popular Basque dessert with puff pastry, pastry creme, and almonds. As we made and ate the pintxos, we drank txakoli and talked with Ben as friends about restaurants, cooking, travel, culture, food, and family. It was as enjoyable an afternoon as I have ever spent on a holiday. Then Ben walked us through the preparation of our main lunch, a delicious dish of hake and clams in salsa verde. As with the pintxos, everything was simple but very hands on...this was not a demo, this was cooking! The lunch, much like the entire experience, was absolutely delightful. I cannot recommend this tour or Basque Guides highly enough. It was a gorgeous highlight of our trip to Spain and one of the most enjoyable and memorable tours I have ever had through travel to over 27 countries (and counting!) in my life. Don't think or wait...go as soon you can on this tour!!

The Gastronomical Societies in Basque are for members and their guests only, but fortunately, Iker is an actual member who was able to cook lunch for us inside the club. In addition to eating a wonderful Basque lunch, we were able to hear about the history of the society and how it operates. We did see and greet other members, but in general each group does their own cooking and mingling. Iker is a great guide and world traveler who understands how to make people feel comfortable in what is "an extension of his home". If you want to visit a club, I highly recommend this tour. I found that other tours of Gastronomy Clubs allow you to briefly visit one, but your meal is elsewhere.

Once upon a time the Basque gastronomic societies were secret but we enjoyed a wonderful day of discovery with Iker. Starting with a walking tour in San Sebastian's old town learning some of the history of the city and the region, then a visit to the market to buy fresh produce for our lunch. We were taken to his sociedad gastronomic for a delicious lunch with cider and wines from the region. Iker was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his work and the Basque country and was also a very good cook - men only, and no women in the kitchen. This was a wonderful day, thoroughly enjoyable and a highlight of our trip. Highly recommended!

Iker was a fantastic tour guide. His enthusiasm was great and his knowledge extensive. He accommodated the foodies and non-foodies alike. It was a real adventure and we would never have ventured into so many different places and tried so many excellent pinitos! Highly recommended Iker.

Great time and great food! Chef Ben was a gracious host and we had a fun time cooking and learning from him. Experiencing the gastronomy club was quite cool too, and a very unique aspect of Donostia's rich and delicious culture.
