Your Itinerary

Gedenkstaette Seelower Hoehen

Here your guide will provide a detailed overview of the Berlin-Seelow offensive operation and highlight key exhibitions, including a 3D model of the Soviet 1st Belorussian Front bunker and trench network which will be visited later in the tour. Guests will be able to explore the museum at their own leisure following the introduction.

Admission Included

Am Reitweiner Sporn

After the museum, it is a short drive to the next town of Reitwein. This small and unassuming town played a vital role in the Soviet advance and was the starting point for the 1st Belorussian Front assault on Seelow and the future advance on Berlin. The Soviet’s amassed a force of 768,000 Infantry (including 78,556 soldiers of the Polish 1st Army), 3,059 tanks, 16,934 artillery and mortars as well as 3,279 combat aircraft.

Am Reitweiner Sporn

A short walk from the town through the forest the tour will come to the bunker and trench network systems, the remnants of which can still be seen today, including Marshal Zhukov’s command bunker and observation point where he commanded the battle.

Kita Dolgeliner Zwerge

Following a small excursion through the trench network the tour will continue to Dolgelin Railway station. It was here that Colonel Scheunemann, commander of the 303rd Infantry Division set up his command post in defence of the heights. Here the tour will take stock of the German defensive positions and highlight the immense difficulties the Russian and Polish troops faced in crossing the aptly named ‘shooting gallery’.

Komturei Lietzen

From there the tour begins the journey back to Berlin following the original route of the Soviet advance. Passing through the town of Lietzen, the tour will briefly stop at the German field cemetery. It is of meaningful importance as this site has been significantly extended since Unification, as newly found remains are constantly added to the wartime graves. The town also hosts what is said to be Germany’s oldest barn and a manor house built by the Knights Templar dating back to 1252.

Schlosskirche Jahnsfelde

The final stop at the town of Jahnsfelde underpins the brutality and desperation of the fighting. Showcasing a sports field, the once site of a German field hospital mercilessly attacked by Soviet aircraft targeting the red cross markings and the last stand of the 3rd Battalion of the Artillery Regiment 18. Caught at the crossroads by advancing Soviet armor during the withdrawal, the Battalion hastily set up defensive positions destroying an estimated 100 tanks at the cost of 8 officers, 163 killed, over two-thirds of the battalion wounded, and all guns lost.

Alexanderplatz

One of the best battlefield tours I’ve ever had. Guide is genuinely enthusiastic and knowledgeable. “Left field” questions were answered with enthusiasm and genuine knowledge. He carried across the experience of the battlefield to make you truly believe you were there in 1945. Superb!

Being able to see the actual battlefield area. It gave me a better understanding of the battle. The tour guide was knowledgeable. He had large maps of the battle to help us understand the battle. He was also very considerate of the slowest walker (me). I was impressed with his preparation, He had water for us, fruit and cookies if we wanted. I would take another tour from him.

Don’t hesitate for one more second — book a tour with ‘On The Front Tours’ now! Matt was absolutely phenomenal and exceeded every expectation we had for our tour. So much so, we booked ANOTHER tour with him a day later. My husband is a huge WWII history buff and was so impressed with all of Matt’s extensive knowledge, experience, and comparative photographs he brought to the tour. He truly makes you feel as if you are standing in the middle of all the war action no matter where your tour takes place. He was even able to keep me engaged for 7+ hours and I am not into history the way my husband is. Matt is an all around wonderful person, very easy to talk to, and makes you feel so welcome from the second you meet. I warn you not to waste your time with the €20 tour from a random person/company. I compared ‘On The Front’ to everyone and I am 110% positive I made the best decision booking them. Do not hesitate to book with ‘On The Front Tours’. There is no company in Berlin that can beat them — I promise — they are worth it!

When I booked this trip for my husband, I thought “yawn”, be the nice wife and go along! Can I say that I was not bored at all…. Matt is extremely engaging and very knowledgeable which made the day. From agreeing to a hotel pickup prior to the tour at a cost which we were happy to pay. To tea and cake in Seelow heights, water, plenty of bathroom stops and a fantastic lunch to end the day. Each stop told a story and being able to walk the battlefield and trenches gave you a greater perspective of what the Russian army had to endure. A lot is known about the western front and it was amazing to discuss the eastern front. The tour is about 7-8 hours but it flys by… disappointed now we did not book another tour with the group. I would highly recommend for any wife, but wear boots for the journey into the fields

"I first read about the Seelow Heights about 50 years ago when I read Cornelius Ryan's book, "The Last Battle" as a teenager. It has exerted a fascination for me ever since. A distant battle both in time and place. When I decided to visit Berlin on a battlefield trip, I checked out the guided tour options and was delighted to see that On the Front Tours (OFT) offered a trip to the Seelow Heights, so I booked it immediately. I wasn't disappointed as it was a full day trip expertly led by Jorge, who took us not only to the Heights and the museum, but to other memorials as well. We ended our day at Jahnsfelde where Jorge told us about the last stand there by the German 18th Artillery regiment, where they destroyed about 100 Russian tanks. On the practical side, Jorge attended to our every comfort and we were liberally supplied with refreshments at our lunch break. The tour is excellent value for money and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Eastern Front". I would certainly go again when I next visit Berlin."

Very informative tour. We saw the key locations involved with the battle and learned much about the events that occurred there. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, helpful, and gracious. We had a wonderful experience.

Matt was a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable and informative during the tour. He made sure everyone in the group was included; taking the time and effort to get to know us all personally. This was such a highlight of our trip, we left with a greater understanding of the battle and were thoroughly impressed by Matt's professionalism and enthusiasm.

This was an excellent tour, well tailored to small groups and solo travelers like myself. Matt is an extremely knowledgeable guide who was prepared to answer in depth any question you could have. He also did a good job of keeping us moving so we could see everything.
