Day 7: Chasing Waterfalls and Enchanted Caves: A Day of Wonder in Chapada Diamantina
Follow Abena's solo journey through Chapada Diamantina as she discovers hidden waterfalls and the mystical Poço Encantado, a day of pure magic.
Whispers of Water and Light
Today was a day of exploration that felt like stepping into another world. The Chapada Diamantina has a way of revealing its secrets slowly, and today, it unveiled some truly magical places. It was a day filled with the sounds of cascading water, the cool touch of subterranean air, and the ethereal glow of an enchanted pool. These are the days that remind me why I set out on this solo adventure in the first place.
My day began, as most have here, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. It's becoming a comforting ritual, fueling up with local flavors before heading out into the wilderness. The energy from the food was much needed, knowing the adventures that awaited me.
First on the agenda was Cachoeira do Sossego, or 'Tranquility Waterfall'. The name alone promised a serene experience, but the journey there was anything but! The trail, starting from Lençóis, was an 8-kilometer trek that tested my resolve. It wasn't just a simple hike; it involved navigating rocky paths and, for a significant stretch, walking along the riverbed of the Rio Ribeirão. I had to watch my step, carefully maneuvering over stones that the water had smoothed over centuries. There were a few instances where I had to give myself a little pep talk, reminding myself that the destination was worth the effort. It was definitely a good thing I had those hiking boots with me, something I made sure to pack after almost forgetting them!

The hike was challenging, yes, but also incredibly rewarding. The scenery was breathtaking, with towering canyon walls and lush vegetation surrounding me. The air was filled with the sounds of nature – the chirping of unseen birds, the rustling of leaves, and the constant murmur of the river. I even spotted a few colorful butterflies flitting about, adding a touch of whimsy to the rugged landscape.
After about three hours of hiking, I finally reached Cachoeira do Sossego, and all the effort instantly faded away. The waterfall cascaded down from a height of about 20 meters into a natural pool of crystal-clear water. The water was refreshingly cold, perfect for a revitalizing swim after the long hike. I took my time, soaking in the beauty of the place and letting the tranquility wash over me. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect reward for the challenges I had overcome.
Sometimes, the most beautiful places are the ones you have to work hardest to reach.
As I sat there, letting the cool water wash over me, I thought about Klaus and Ama back in Potsdam. I wished they could be here with me, experiencing this natural wonder. Ama would have loved splashing in the shallow parts of the pool, and Klaus would have appreciated the geological formations of the canyon walls. I made a mental note to plan a family trip to Chapada Diamantina in the future, so they too could experience this magical place.
After a fulfilling morning at Cachoeira do Sossego, I hiked back to town for a quick bite. Lunch was a simple affair – a packed sandwich enjoyed amidst the stunning backdrop of the park itself. Fuelled and ready for more, I set off for my next destination: Poço Encantado, the Enchanted Well.
Discover Poço Encantado: A mesmerizing natural wonder in Bahia with crystal-clear turquoise waters and stunning sunbeam displays.
Poço Encantado is located in Itaetê, a bit of a drive from Lençóis. The journey itself was an adventure, as I passed through small towns and rural landscapes, getting a glimpse into the local way of life. When I arrived, I was immediately struck by the sheer beauty of the place. Poço Encantado is a subterranean lake, hidden inside a cave that has been formed over millions of years by water eroding the soluble rocks.
The cave itself was awe-inspiring, with towering rock formations and an otherworldly atmosphere. The air was cool and damp, and the silence was broken only by the occasional drip of water. As I descended the steps leading down to the lake, I could feel the anticipation building. I had seen pictures of Poço Encantado, but nothing could have prepared me for the real thing.
The lake was breathtaking. The water was so clear that it was hard to tell where the water began. And then there was the light. From April to September, the sun's rays penetrate through an opening in the cave, creating a beam of light that illuminates the water in the most magical way. Unfortunately, November isn't the ideal time to see the direct beam, but the water still glowed with an otherworldly blue hue. It felt like stepping into a dream, a place where time stood still and the ordinary rules didn't apply. Swimming isn't allowed in Poço Encantado in order to preserve the natural wonder, but simply being there, in that moment, was enough.
Standing there, mesmerized by the beauty of Poço Encantado, I couldn't help but reflect on my journey so far. This solo trip to Chapada Diamantina was exactly what I needed. It was a chance to reconnect with nature, to challenge myself physically and mentally, and to discover new things about myself. As a software developer working on AI applications for sustainable agriculture, I spend so much time in front of a screen. It's easy to get lost in the digital world and forget about the beauty and wonder that exists in the real world. This trip was a reminder of what's truly important – our connection to nature, our connection to each other, and our connection to ourselves.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way back to Lençóis, my heart full of gratitude for the experiences I had. I stopped by Roots Bar for a well-deserved drink, savoring the lively atmosphere and reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Dinner was, once again, at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. I opted for a traditional Bahian dish, savoring the flavors and spices that are so unique to this region. As I ate, I chatted with some of the other travelers, sharing stories and experiences. It's amazing how travel can bring people together, creating connections that transcend borders and cultures.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Cachoeira Mixila, another of Chapada Diamantina’s hidden gems. I’ve heard it’s a bit off the beaten path, which only makes me more excited to explore it. I also want to check out Artesanato Natureza Criativa, a local shop that sells handcrafted goods. I’m hoping to find a unique souvenir to take back home to Klaus and Ama. For now, though, it’s time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in this incredible place.
Chapada Diamantina, you have truly enchanted me. The memory of the Sossego waterfall and the mystic Poço Encantado will stay with me forever.
