Day 4: Island Views and Mainland Flavors: A Day of Discovery Near Hinchinbrook
Exploring the beauty of Brook Islands National Park and Hinchinbrook Lookout, savoring local flavors in Townsville, Australia with family.
Postcard from the Edge of Paradise
Today was a blend of mainland comforts and island vistas, a reminder that even in the heart of an adventure, a touch of familiar can be a welcome treat. We started our day with a taste of Townsville before casting our eyes upon the natural wonders surrounding Hinchinbrook Island.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the North Shore Tavern, Townsville. It’s always a treat to find a spot that caters to both adults and children, and this place seemed to strike that balance perfectly. Sofia was particularly thrilled with the children's play area, allowing Maximilian and me to enjoy our coffee in relative peace. Fuelled up with Aussie breakfast staples, we set off for our first adventure: a glimpse of Brook Islands National Park.

The drive to Cardwell Op Shop offered a scenic route, showcasing the vast landscapes of Queensland. Upon reaching the coast, we learned that direct access to the Brook Islands is prohibited to protect the breeding birds. While I was initially disappointed, understanding the importance of conservation quickly shifted my perspective. Instead, we admired the islands from afar, discussing the unique ecosystem they harbor and the incredible biodiversity of the region. Seeing those islands, even from a distance, sparked a sense of wonder in Sofia, who peppered us with questions about the birds and the marine life that call those islands home.
Sometimes, the best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next on our itinerary was the Hinchinbrook Lookout. As we drove along the Bruce Highway, anticipation grew with each passing kilometer. The lookout is perched at the top of the Cardwell Range, offering panoramic views of Hinchinbrook Island and the meandering rivers below. The interpretive signs provided fascinating insights into the island's geography and history, enriching our understanding of this natural wonder. We took the short walk to Panjoo Lookout, a slightly elevated spot that offered even more unobstructed views. Despite some cloud cover, the vista was breathtaking, and I couldn't resist snapping dozens of photos. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the Hinchinbrook Channel, imagining all sorts of adventures taking place on the water.

Lunch was a casual affair at the Royal Hotel in Townsville. The hotel's veranda provided a relaxing spot to enjoy our meal, with a cool breeze offering respite from the tropical heat. We opted for some classic pub fare, and Sofia was delighted with her fish and chips. It was a simple but satisfying meal, a perfect interlude before our afternoon activity.
Our final stop for the day was the Cardwell Op Shop. I have a soft spot for second-hand stores, and this one didn't disappoint. It was a treasure trove of quirky finds and vintage gems, and I enjoyed browsing through the racks, imagining the stories behind each item. Sofia, surprisingly, was equally engaged, picking out a few books and a vintage toy. It's these unexpected moments of connection that make our family trips so special.
For dinner, we ventured to Ingham to experience Lees Hotel - the Pub with No Beer. This place has a legendary status, thanks to Slim Dusty's iconic song. The pub's history is palpable, and we enjoyed soaking in the atmosphere while savoring some hearty meals. I couldn't resist ordering a steak, and it was cooked to perfection. Sofia, of course, was more interested in the story behind the pub's name, and we recounted the tale of the American servicemen who drank all the beer during World War II. It's these little anecdotes that bring history to life for her.

As we drove back to our campsite, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the panoramic views of Hinchinbrook Island to the quirky finds at the op shop and the historical charm of the Pub with No Beer, it was a day filled with diverse experiences and unexpected delights. It reinforced my belief that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about discovering new perspectives and creating lasting memories. Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Butterfly Valley and Hinchinbrook Channel. I am excited for another day of natural beauty and family fun.
