Exploring the Majestic Bungle Bungle Range with Family
Day 1: Embarking on a Bungle Bungle Adventure: First Impressions and Anticipations
Join our family's first day exploring the Bungle Bungle Range, from Kununurra to the heart of Purnululu National Park. A Kimberley adventure begins!
The Journey Begins: Kununurra to the Bungle Bungle
After months of planning and anticipation, our family adventure to the Bungle Bungle Range in Western Australia has finally begun. The journey from Denmark to this remote corner of the world was long, but the excitement in the air is palpable. As a restorer of antique furniture, I'm accustomed to appreciating the beauty of age and history, and I have a feeling the Bungle Bungle will offer a masterclass in both.
Our day started early with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park. Astrid, Lasse, and I fueled up on a delicious buffet, preparing ourselves for the day's explorations. The lodge itself is quite charming, nestled comfortably within the landscape. It is November, so the weather is warm, with clear skies above us, perfect for the adventures ahead.

Our first official stop was the Kununurra Visitor Centre. This was more than just a place to gather maps; it was an immersion into the local culture and history. We were greeted by incredibly helpful staff, eager to share their knowledge of the area. Lasse, my son, was particularly interested in the displays about the indigenous history, while Astrid, ever the librarian, was drawn to the collection of local guides and books. I picked up a detailed map, tracing our route to the Bungle Bungle Range with anticipation. It seems that Kununurra is a vibrant hub, with the Kununurra Christmas Markets coming up soon.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and today, our step was onto the red dirt of the Kimberley.
Next on the agenda was a bit of shopping at Bungle Bungle Guided Tours | Kimberley Air and Walking Tours. We needed to stock up on a few last-minute essentials – a new hat for Lasse (he managed to leave his in Copenhagen!) and some extra sunscreen. The shop was filled with an impressive array of tour options, from scenic flights to guided walks. It gave us a taste of what tomorrow might hold. They have scenic flights over the Bungle Bungles. I was particularly intrigued by the idea of seeing the landscape from above, but Astrid is more keen on exploring the gorges on foot.

For lunch, we stopped at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company. It was a more casual affair, but the food was satisfying. The caravan park seemed like a popular spot for travelers, and we met a few interesting characters swapping stories of their outback adventures. I overheard snippets about Cathedral Gorge and Echidna Chasm, which are apparently must-see destinations within the Bungle Bungle Range.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge for dinner. This lodge is known for its elegant accommodations and excellent dining experiences. The lodge offers views of the surrounding landscape. Dinner was a delightful affair, with local specialties that gave us a true taste of the Kimberley region. I savored every bite, appreciating the blend of flavors and the stories they told of this ancient land. Astrid particularly enjoyed the fresh pastries, while Lasse, surprisingly, devoured a plate of local fruit.

The evening was spent under the stars, sharing stories and laughter with my family. The vastness of the Australian outback is humbling, and I felt a sense of peace and connection that is rare in our busy lives back in Silkeborg. The clear night sky was a spectacle in itself, a canvas of stars that stretched out infinitely above us. I even managed to spot the Southern Cross, a sight I had only ever read about in books.
Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the heart of the Bungle Bungle Range. Cathedral Gorge and Echidna Chasm are on the itinerary, and I am eager to witness these natural wonders firsthand. We'll have breakfast at Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. I am also looking forward to enjoying a drink at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge bar. I've heard tales of their unique formations and the way the light plays upon the ancient rock. I am hoping to capture some of that beauty through my own lens, preserving these memories for years to come. Astrid is particularly excited about the prospect of hiking through the gorges, eager to explore the unique flora and fauna of the region. Lasse, with his teenage energy, is simply looking forward to the adventure.
As I settle into my tent for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore such a remarkable place with my family. The Bungle Bungle Range has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the days ahead will be filled with even more wonder and discovery. This trip is not just a vacation; it's a chance to connect with nature, with history, and with each other.
I am also grateful that I remembered to pack all of our essentials, especially our camping gear, hiking boots, and sunscreen. However, I did forget a portable phone charger, and I am already regretting it. I will need to be mindful of my battery usage in the coming days. I also wish I had brought binoculars to get a closer look at the diverse wildlife in the area. Perhaps I can find a pair in Kununurra before we head back.
The sounds of the outback lull me to sleep – the gentle rustling of leaves, the distant call of a bird, and the comforting presence of my loved ones nearby. Tomorrow, the adventure continues, and I can't wait to see what the Bungle Bungle Range has in store for us. I feel truly blessed to be able to share this experience with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Perhaps, when I return to my workshop in Silkeborg, I will be able to create a piece of furniture that captures the essence of this remarkable place, a tangible reminder of our Bungle Bungle adventure.
