Whispers of the Past
Today was a day of exploration that took me from the serene, ancient ruins of Choquesuysuy to the bustling Mercado Central de San Pedro in Cusco. It's amazing to think that these stones have stood for centuries, silent witnesses to the rise and fall of civilizations. As a restorer of antique furniture, I often feel a connection to the past, but being here in Peru, surrounded by such tangible history, is something else entirely. It's a privilege to walk these paths and try to imagine the lives of those who came before.

My day began early, with a hearty breakfast at KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food. I decided to start my day with a traditional Peruvian breakfast, and KUSYKAY was just the place. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, high-quality ingredients sourced from local markets, ensuring that every bite bursts with authentic flavor. Sipping on strong Peruvian coffee, I planned my itinerary for the day, eager to explore the historical sites and immerse myself in the local culture.
Fuelled up, I set off to explore Choquesuysuy, a site that felt like a well-kept secret. The journey itself was an adventure, winding through the rugged terrain of the Andes. The air was crisp and cool, a welcome change from the warmer temperatures in Cusco. As I hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on the meticulous planning that goes into these ancient sites. The Incas were master engineers, and their ability to build such enduring structures is a testament to their skill and ingenuity.
Choquesuysuy, often referred to as Machu Picchu's sister, offered a serene and contemplative experience. Unlike the crowded trails of its more famous counterpart, Choquesuysuy was tranquil, allowing me to fully immerse myself in its history. The stonework was impressive, and as I wandered through the ruins, I imagined what life must have been like for the people who once lived here. The views were simply stunning, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains. I spent hours exploring every nook and cranny, taking in the sheer beauty and historical significance of the site.
According to archaeologists, Choquesuysuy, in Quechua, means Lavadero de oro. The word choque translates to oro fino, while suysuy alludes to lavar or colar. It is believed that in this place, they carried out the lavado del alma, a purification bath considered the first step towards the acceptance of the gods.
The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After a morning of historical exploration, my stomach started to rumble, reminding me that it was time for lunch. I made my way to Mistura Grill & Restaurant, enticed by the promise of traditional Peruvian cuisine with a modern twist. The restaurant is known for its excellent location with spectacular views. As I sat down, I was immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere and the tantalizing aromas wafting from the kitchen.

I ordered Lomo Saltado, a classic Peruvian dish consisting of stir-fried beef, onions, tomatoes, and peppers, served with rice and potatoes. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of savory and spicy. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but marvel at the culinary diversity of Peru. It's a country that truly has something to offer every palate.
With my appetite sated, I decided to immerse myself in the local culture with a visit to the Mercado Central de San Pedro. This bustling market is a sensory overload, a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. As I wandered through the crowded aisles, I was struck by the sheer variety of goods on offer, from fresh produce and meats to textiles and handicrafts. It was a feast for the senses, and I found myself drawn to the vibrant displays of fruits and vegetables, many of which I had never seen before.

I picked up a few souvenirs for Astrid and Lasse, knowing they would appreciate the colorful textiles and unique handicrafts. I also couldn't resist trying some of the local delicacies, including empanadas and chicha morada, a sweet purple corn drink. The market was a true reflection of the local culture, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience it firsthand.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself at PERUCHO Restaurant Craft Beer, ready for a hearty dinner. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with a wide selection of craft beers and traditional Peruvian dishes. I opted for the aji de gallina, a creamy chicken stew served with rice and potatoes. It was the perfect comfort food after a long day of exploring.

It was a day I would never forget.
