Day 1: Echoes of the Incas Begin

The air is crisp, the sun is shining, and my heart is pounding with anticipation. Today marks the beginning of my solo trek to Choquequirao Trail, a journey I've been dreaming about for months. Leaving Silkeborg and Astrid behind for a couple of weeks is never easy, but the allure of the Andes and the mysteries of the Inca civilization were too strong to resist. This adventure promises a blend of physical challenge and historical immersion, a combination that speaks directly to my soul.

My journey began in Cusco, a city that still vibrates with the energy of its Incan past. After a somewhat bumpy but scenic bus ride, I arrived at the trailhead, ready to embark on what I know will be an unforgettable experience. The initial descent along the Choquequirao Trail was immediately challenging. My knees protested with every step, a stark reminder that even though I try to stay active with my woodworking and cycling around Silkeborg, the Andes are a different beast altogether.
As I descended, the landscape opened up before me, revealing the Apurimac River far below. The views were simply breathtaking, a tapestry of green valleys and rugged peaks stretching as far as the eye could see. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to soak in the sheer beauty of it all. This is what I came for, I thought, this feeling of being utterly insignificant in the face of such grandeur.
I made a stop for breakfast at LA TERRAZA DE CHOQUEQUIRAO, a small restaurant with panoramic views. The hearty meal of traditional American cuisine set me up perfectly for the trek and I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. The promise of hearty meals and a warm, welcoming atmosphere was very welcome after a long journey. It was a reminder that even in the most remote corners of the world, human connection and hospitality can be found.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and today, my steps are echoing through the heart of the Inca empire.
The Choquequirao Archaeological Park was my ultimate destination for the day. As I hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on the history of this place, often referred to as the sister city of Machu Picchu. Built in the 15th century, Choquequirao served as an administrative and religious center, a vital link between Cusco and the Amazon jungle. It was also a refuge for Inca rebels during the Spanish conquest, a last stand against the tide of history. Knowing this, every stone I passed seemed to whisper tales of resilience and resistance.

The trail itself was a mix of challenging descents and gentle inclines, winding through lush vegetation and alongside gurgling streams. I passed a few locals, mostly farmers and muleteers, who greeted me with warm smiles and a simple Hola! Their faces, weathered by the sun and wind, spoke of a life lived in harmony with the mountains, a life that both intrigued and humbled me.
I also stopped by Choquequirao Trail Shops, where I picked up a few essentials and admired the local crafts. It's fascinating to see how the traditions of the Andes are kept alive through these handmade textiles, pottery, and jewelry. I even managed to haggle for a small woven bracelet, a memento of my first day on the trail.

Lunch was at the Choquequirao craft restaurant peruvian cuisine, a delightful spot where I enjoyed authentic Peruvian dishes. The flavors were vibrant and bold, a testament to the country's rich culinary heritage. It was a welcome break, fueling me for the afternoon's hike. The restaurant’s commitment to fresh, local ingredients was evident in every bite, making the meal both delicious and culturally enriching.

Finally, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, I reached Choquequirao Archaeological Park. The sight that greeted me was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Terraces stretched across the mountainside, meticulously crafted stone walls climbed towards the sky, and the entire complex seemed to hum with an ancient energy. I spent hours exploring the site, marveling at the ingenuity and artistry of the Incas. The ceremonial platforms, stone baths, and grand plazas offered a glimpse into their sophisticated way of life.
I found myself particularly drawn to the llama rocks, unique designs found nowhere else in Inca architecture. These intricate carvings, etched into the stone terraces, depicted llamas in various poses, a testament to the animal's importance in Incan society. It was a humbling experience to stand before these ancient artworks, feeling a connection to the people who created them so many centuries ago.
Dinner at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant was the perfect end to the day. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere and I enjoyed sampling some of their craft beers. I decided on a local brew, its hoppy aroma mingling with the scent of wood smoke from the nearby kitchen. The food was hearty and satisfying, a welcome reward after a long day on the trail.

As I sat there, sipping my beer and watching the stars begin to pepper the night sky, I couldn't help but feel a sense of profound gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place, gratitude for the strength and resilience of the Incan people, and gratitude for the simple pleasures of good food, good beer, and the company of fellow travelers. The friendly staff and the overall ambiance of the restaurant made it a memorable conclusion to my first day.
The Choquequirao Trek is already proving to be everything I hoped for and more. It's a challenging journey, both physically and mentally, but the rewards are immeasurable. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Abra Choquequirao and Choquequirao Puquio. I am excited to see what new wonders await me as I delve deeper into the heart of the Inca empire. I am ready to embrace whatever challenges lie ahead, knowing that each step brings me closer to understanding the mysteries of this ancient civilization.
Back at my simple lodgings for the night, I journaled by the dim light of a small lamp. I realized that this journey is not just about seeing ancient ruins; it's about connecting with the spirit of the Andes, about pushing my limits, and about finding a sense of peace in the solitude of the mountains. It's a journey that will stay with me long after I return to Silkeborg, a reminder that there is always more to discover, both in the world around us and within ourselves.
As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of stone terraces, snow-capped peaks, and the echoes of a civilization that once thrived in this remote corner of the world. I felt a deep sense of connection to the past, a sense of belonging to something larger than myself. And in that moment, I knew that this was just the beginning of an extraordinary adventure.
