A Warm Embrace from San Miguel

After a long journey from Silkeborg, via Mexico City, I finally arrived in San Miguel de Allende. The anticipation had been building for months, and I must admit, the reality has exceeded all expectations. I'm here on a solo trip, a chance to fully immerse myself in the culture and artistry of this beautiful city, a welcome change from my usual work restoring antique furniture. It's also a chance for Astrid to enjoy some peace and quiet without my clutter in the house.

The bus trip from Mexico City was comfortable, offering glimpses of the Mexican countryside. As we approached San Miguel, the landscape transformed, revealing rolling hills and the iconic silhouette of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel against the skyline. The air was crisp and clean, a refreshing change from the city bustle. I can already tell this journey is going to be good for my soul. I've checked into LOtel-Casa Arca, and it's a delightful haven. The courtyard is filled with the scent of blooming jasmine, and the staff are incredibly welcoming. My room is cozy, with a beautiful view of the city – the perfect base for my explorations.

Exploring the Centro Histórico

My first order of business was to wander through the Centro Histórico. Stepping onto the cobblestone streets felt like stepping back in time. The colonial architecture is simply breathtaking; every building is painted in vibrant hues of ochre, terracotta, and blue, creating a visual feast. The streets were bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike, all drawn to the heart of San Miguel.

I spent hours simply wandering, camera in hand, capturing the beauty of the architecture and the energy of the city. Little shops selling handcrafted goods lined the streets, and the aroma of delicious food wafted from every corner. It was a feast for the senses, and I found myself completely captivated by the charm of San Miguel.

Awe at the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel

No visit to San Miguel is complete without seeing the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. This iconic church dominates the city's skyline with its neo-Gothic façade. I was truly in awe. The pink stone spires reach towards the heavens, creating a striking contrast against the clear blue sky. I learned that the original façade was much simpler, but in the late 19th century, a local stonemason, Zeferino Gutierrez, was inspired by postcards of European cathedrals and redesigned it. Gutierrez, without any formal architectural training, created this magnificent structure that embodies the spirit of San Miguel.

I stepped inside the church, and the interior was just as impressive. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, casting colorful patterns on the walls. The air was filled with the scent of incense and the hushed whispers of prayers. I sat for a while, simply soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on the history and artistry that surrounded me. I am not particularly religious, but I do appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication that went into creating such a beautiful space.

Culinary Delights: A Taste of Mexico

For breakfast, I ventured to Cafe Oso Azul, a charming spot known for its delicious coffee and traditional Mexican fare. The courtyard was peaceful, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered chilaquiles verdes, a classic dish of fried tortilla chips simmered in green salsa, topped with cheese, cream, and a fried egg. It was the perfect way to start the day. The coffee was strong and flavorful, just what I needed after my travels.

Lunch was at Hecho en México, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Mexican cuisine. I sat in the elegant courtyard, surrounded by flowering trellises, and enjoyed a delightful meal of Veracruz-style grilled tilapia. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect place to savor the culinary delights of San Miguel.

In the late afternoon, I explored Tienda Madre Tierra Correo, a local shop offering a variety of natural products. It was a treasure trove of unique gifts, from artisanal soaps and lotions to herbal teas and essential oils. I picked up a few small items for Astrid, knowing she would appreciate the natural ingredients and the local craftsmanship. I also bought a small journal; it felt fitting, given my surroundings, and I thought it would be a good way to keep track of my experiences.

As evening approached, I decided to experience the vibrant nightlife of San Miguel. I headed to Luna Tapas Bar, a rooftop bar known for its stunning views of the city. From there, I watched the sunset over the Parroquia, the sky ablaze with colors of orange, pink, and purple. It was a magical moment, one that I will never forget. I enjoyed a few tapas and a refreshing cocktail, soaking in the atmosphere and chatting with fellow travelers.

For dinner, I had reservations at The Restaurant, known for its international cuisine and elegant setting. The restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored colonial building, with a sun-dappled Moroccan courtyard. I opted for a selection of international dishes, each expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The ambiance was sophisticated yet relaxed, and the service was impeccable. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

Reflections on Day One

As I walked back to my hotel, the city was quiet, the cobblestone streets bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The air was cool and crisp, and the stars twinkled brightly overhead. I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. San Miguel de Allende had welcomed me with open arms, and I was already falling in love with its charm, its history, and its vibrant culture.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Fabrica la Aurora and Parque Benito Juárez. I'm particularly looking forward to exploring the art studios at Fabrica la Aurora and seeing the work of local artists. But for now, I'm content to rest and dream of the adventures that await me in this beautiful city.

I must remember to buy a Spanish phrasebook tomorrow. I had foolishly forgotten to pack one, and while many people speak English, I find it is always better to try and communicate in the local language, and it is something I always encourage Lasse to do when he is travelling. It is a sign of respect, and it enriches the experience.

Now, as the sounds of San Miguel lull me to sleep, I know this solo journey is exactly what I needed. A chance to reconnect with my passions, to explore a new culture, and to find inspiration in the beauty that surrounds me. And perhaps, a chance to find a new piece of furniture to restore, something with a story to tell.

Until tomorrow,

Andrea
