Solo Adventure in Crete: History, Nature, and Culture
Day 7: Farewell Crete: A Day of Discovery and Delicious Farewells
Exploring Crete's natural wonders and savoring its culinary delights on my final day, creating memories to last a lifetime.
A Fond Farewell to Crete
As my Cretan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past week. Today was a day of tying up loose ends, soaking in a bit more of the local culture, and, of course, indulging in some delicious Cretan cuisine. It’s funny how a place can feel like home in such a short time.
My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Arismari & Varsamo in Heraklion. It was a delightful spot, with a very friendly atmosphere and excellent service. I enjoyed traditional Cretan food that gave me a real taste of the local flavors. I savored every bite, knowing it would be one of my last authentic Cretan meals for a while. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back in Berlin, though I suspect the ingredients just won't be quite the same.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed to the Natural History Museum of Crete. I’ve always been fascinated by the natural world, and I was eager to learn more about the unique ecosystems of Crete and the Mediterranean. The museum was conveniently located near the harbor, making it an easy walk from the restaurant.
The Natural History Museum turned out to be an excellent choice. I spent hours wandering through the various exhibits, each one more captivating than the last. The museum is divided into several sections, including zoological, paleontological, and botanical displays. I was particularly impressed by the reconstructions of the Mediterranean ecosystems, showcasing the diverse flora and fauna of the region. I was also intrigued by the Deinotherium, a prehistoric elephant relative whose remains were discovered on Crete. It's amazing to think about the creatures that once roamed this island millions of years ago.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.
One of the highlights of the museum was the interactive exhibits, especially the Stavros Niarchos Discovery Center. Although designed for children, I found myself thoroughly engaged in the games and activities. It was a fun and educational way to learn about the natural processes shaping the island. I even braved the earthquake simulator, which gave me a taste of what it feels like to experience a tremor – a sobering reminder of the forces of nature.
Stepping out of the museum, I decided to take a leisurely stroll towards the Venetian Harbour. The harbor is a beautiful reminder of Crete's rich history. Built by the Venetians in the 14th century, it served as a vital commercial and naval hub. Today, it’s a picturesque spot filled with cafes, restaurants, and shops, offering a perfect blend of history and modern life.

As I walked along the harbor, I admired the Venetian architecture, a testament to the island's diverse cultural influences. The lighthouse, originally built by the Venetians and later restored by the Egyptians, stood proudly at the harbor's entrance. I imagined what it must have been like centuries ago, with ships from all corners of the Mediterranean docking here, bringing goods and ideas from distant lands. I learned that the harbor was carefully built in the 14th century for commercial purposes and for protection against pirate raids. It is filled with cafes, restaurants, tavernas serving local delicacies, bars, pastry stores and art shops as well as monuments referring to various historical periods. I felt a balanced mixing of Cretan, Ottoman and Venetian elements, beautiful narrow alleys across the old town and amazing architecture.
Lunch was at Theodosi restaurant, a charming place with a wonderful panoramic view towards the sea. The food was tasty, properly prepared and a great value for the price. I enjoyed a selection of Cretan specialties, savoring the fresh, local ingredients and the unique flavors of the island. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, making me feel right at home. I was also happy to find vegan options available.

After lunch, I decided to do a bit of souvenir shopping. I wanted to find something special to remind me of my time in Crete, and perhaps a few gifts for Maximilian and Astrid back home. I stumbled upon Elephant Store, a quirky little shop that offered an eclectic mix of lifestyle products, home decor, fashion accessories, and unique gift ideas. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl for our kitchen and a couple of small toys for Astrid. I always try to find items that are locally made and reflect the culture of the place I’m visiting. It's nice to support local artisans and bring home something truly unique.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn back to the Venetian Harbour. The light was beginning to soften, casting a warm glow over the water and the surrounding buildings. I sat at a café, sipping a glass of local wine and watching the world go by. It was a perfect moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to reflect on the incredible journey I had undertaken.
For my final dinner in Crete, I chose Herbs' Garden, a rooftop restaurant that promised stunning views of the Venetian harbor. Located on the roof of Lato Boutique Hotel, the restaurant offered a panoramic vista of the harbor and the endless blue of the Cretan Sea. The name of the restaurant was inspired by the Cretan nature and the fragrances of the herbs that dominate the area of Crete. I enjoyed some fresh fish, a refreshing salad, and fine appetizers accompanied by a glass of Cretan wine. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey through the island.

As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I had had in Crete. From exploring ancient ruins to hiking scenic trails, from sampling local delicacies to meeting warm and welcoming people, this island had captured my heart in a way I hadn't expected.
Tomorrow, I’ll be heading back to Berlin, carrying with me a treasure trove of memories and a renewed appreciation for the beauty and diversity of our world. While I'm sad to leave Crete, I know that this is not goodbye, but rather au revoir. I have a feeling I'll be back someday, perhaps with Maximilian and Astrid in tow, to share the magic of this incredible island with them.
As I prepared to leave for the airport, I took one last look at the starlit Cretan sky. It was a perfect ending to a perfect trip, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that awaits us when we open ourselves to new experiences. Crete, you will be missed, but you will never be forgotten.
The sun sets, marking the end of my Cretan adventure. Until next time!
Safe travels and happy exploring!
