Day 1: The Adventure Begins

After months of planning and anticipation, the day finally arrived. My solo trek to Choquequirao, the cradle of gold, has officially begun. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Zurich, I'm diving headfirst into the rugged beauty of the Peruvian Andes. It's a journey I've been craving – a chance to disconnect from the digital world, challenge myself physically, and immerse myself in the rich history of the Inca civilization. The crisp mountain air already feels like a welcome change, and I'm eager to see what this adventure holds.

My day started early, a flurry of activity as I double-checked my gear one last time. After a quick breakfast at Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer, I grabbed a taxi to the outskirts of Cusco, where the real journey would begin. The morning air was cool, a stark contrast to the bustling city waking up around me. Mei and Wei sent me off with hugs and waves, their faces a mix of excitement and that familiar wifely worry. I promised to send pictures whenever I found a signal, though I secretly hoped to remain blissfully disconnected for as long as possible.

The local bus to Cachora was an experience in itself. Crammed with locals, chickens, and an assortment of goods, it was a vibrant snapshot of everyday Peruvian life. I couldn't help but smile, feeling a world away from my orderly life in Zurich. The journey was long and bumpy, but the stunning views of the Andes made it worthwhile. Snow-capped peaks pierced the sky, and the valleys below were a patchwork of green and gold.

Arriving in Cachora, the starting point of the trek, I felt a surge of excitement. The small town was buzzing with activity, trekkers preparing for their journey, and locals offering last-minute supplies. I took a deep breath, adjusted my backpack, and set off on the Choquequirao Trail. The initial descent was steep, a winding path that snaked down into the Apurimac Canyon. The views were breathtaking, but I had to watch my step, the loose rocks and gravel making the trail treacherous.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

As I descended, the landscape transformed. The air grew warmer, and the vegetation became denser. Towering cacti and vibrant wildflowers lined the trail, adding splashes of color to the rugged terrain. I passed a few other trekkers, exchanging nods and smiles, a silent acknowledgment of the challenge ahead.

Lunch was a simple affair at Choquequirao craft restaurant peruvian cuisine, a small eatery along the trail. I savored a hearty plate of Lomo Saltado, the savory beef stir-fry providing much-needed energy for the afternoon's hike. The owner, a friendly woman with a warm smile, shared stories of the region, her words painting a vivid picture of the Inca civilization that once thrived here.

The afternoon brought more challenging terrain. The trail climbed steadily upwards, the sun beating down relentlessly. Sweat dripped from my brow, and my muscles ached, but I pressed on, driven by the anticipation of reaching my campsite for the night. The scenery continued to inspire, the vastness of the canyon humbling, the towering mountains a constant reminder of nature's power.

I made a quick stop at Choquequirao Trek Peru shop. I was hoping to find a portable charger since I had forgotten mine, but to no avail. I ended up buying an extra water bottle and some snacks. I really need to remember to make a list of things to bring next time.

Finally, as dusk approached, I reached LA TERRAZA DE CHOQUEQUIRAO, my campsite for the night. Exhausted but exhilarated, I pitched my tent, the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains a reward for my efforts. As I sat down to dinner, a simple meal of soup and bread, I reflected on the day's journey.

The physical challenge was undeniable, but the mental and emotional rewards were even greater. I felt a sense of accomplishment, a connection to nature, and a deep appreciation for the resilience of the Inca people. The stars began to emerge, a brilliant tapestry against the dark sky. I drifted off to sleep, the sounds of the river below lulling me into a peaceful slumber.

Tomorrow promises more adventure. According to the itinerary, I'll be exploring the Choquequirao Archaeological Park and hiking to Abra Choquequirao. I'm particularly excited about seeing the archaeological park; I've read so much about it, and I can't wait to experience it firsthand. I'm also curious about Abra Choquequirao; I've heard the views from there are incredible.

Before drifting off to sleep, I journaled about the day’s adventures, the highs and lows, the unexpected encounters, and the sheer beauty of the landscape. As I closed my journal, I felt a profound sense of gratitude. This was exactly the kind of adventure I needed – a chance to disconnect, challenge myself, and reconnect with the world around me.

As I settle into my tent for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what tomorrow holds. The Choquequirao Archaeological Park awaits, and I'm eager to explore its ancient wonders. But for now, I'll rest and recharge, knowing that the journey is just beginning.

I am also excited to see what Organika Restaurant, Pachapapa, and Green House have to offer tomorrow. I have heard good things, and am looking forward to trying them. I'm also planning to check out Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. I'm curious to see what kind of local brews they have on tap.

This trek is already shaping up to be an unforgettable experience, and I can't wait to share more of it with you.

Until tomorrow,
Chi
