Today was a whirlwind of Florentine experiences, a perfect blend of history, art, and, of course, the exquisite Italian cuisine that I've been dreaming about. Florence continues to enchant me, and I'm so excited to share the highlights of our Sunday adventure.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Gilli, a historic café that exudes old-world charm. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Italian coffee filled the air. Established in 1733, Caffè Gilli has been a favourite spot for artists and intellectuals for centuries. The elegant decor, with its marble countertops and frescoed ceilings, transported me back in time. I savoured a creamy cappuccino and a delicate *torta della nonna*, a custard-filled pastry that was simply divine. James opted for a rich espresso and a chocolate-filled croissant, while Eglė enjoyed a *cannoli Siciliani*. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration.

Fueled up, we made our way to Palazzo Vecchio, the imposing fortress-like palace that has been the heart of Florentine political life for centuries. The sheer size and grandeur of the building are awe-inspiring. Originally designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, the Palazzo Vecchio has witnessed some of the most tumultuous periods of Florence's history. As we stepped inside, we were immediately transported back to the 14th century. The palace is a treasure trove of art and history, with each room more magnificent than the last. We explored the *Salone dei Cinquecento*, the Hall of the Five Hundred, with its intricate frescoes depicting Florentine military victories. I was particularly struck by Michelangelo's *Victory* statue, a powerful symbol of strength and resilience.

To awaken alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.

Eglė was fascinated by the secret passages and hidden rooms that were once used by the Medici family. We learned about Cosimo I de' Medici, who moved his official seat to Palazzo Vecchio in 1540 and commissioned Giorgio Vasari to renovate the palace in Renaissance style. It's amazing to think that this palace has been the seat of the Florentine government for over seven centuries. The views from the tower were spectacular, offering a panoramic vista of the city's terracotta rooftops and the Arno River winding its way through the landscape. It was a truly unforgettable experience, and I felt a deep connection to the city's rich past.

Next, we strolled to the nearby Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air sculpture gallery that stands in stark contrast to the severe architecture of the Palazzo Vecchio. The Loggia dei Lanzi, also known as the Loggia della Signoria, was built in the 14th century to house public ceremonies and assemblies. Today, it is home to a collection of impressive Renaissance and Roman sculptures. We admired Benvenuto Cellini's *Perseus with the Head of Medusa*, a bronze statue that depicts the mythical Greek hero holding up the Medusa's decapitated head. Eglė was particularly captivated by Giambologna's *Rape of the Sabine Women*, a marble sculpture that is considered a masterpiece of Mannerist art. The sculptures were chosen to represent specific political meanings. The Loggia dei Lanzi felt like an outdoor museum, a place where art and history come together in a beautiful and inspiring way.

For lunch, we ventured to All’Antico Vinaio, a popular sandwich shop known for its *schiacciata* bread. The line was long, but the aroma of freshly baked bread and cured meats was too enticing to resist. I opted for *La Summer*, a panini filled with Tuscan peppered prosciutto, mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. James chose *La Favolosa*, featuring *shriciolona*, pecorino cream, artichoke cream, and spicy eggplant. The sandwiches were massive, and the ingredients were incredibly fresh. It was a delicious and satisfying meal, and I understood why All’Antico Vinaio is considered one of the best sandwich shops in Florence. We sat on a nearby bench, soaking up the lively atmosphere and enjoying our *panini*.

In the afternoon, we visited the Leonardo da Vinci Interactive Museum, a fascinating museum that brings the genius of Leonardo da Vinci to life. The museum features working models of Leonardo's inventions, hand-crafted from his original sketches. Eglė was thrilled to operate the Giant Tank, the Catapult, and the Vertical Ornithopter. The museum was a tactile, educational, and active space, perfect for curious visitors like us who wanted to explore Leonardo's mechanics. The interactive exhibits allowed us to understand how his inventions worked and appreciate his innovative mind. I was particularly impressed by the diversity of Leonardo's interests, from war-fare technology to flying machines. The museum offered a unique opportunity to connect with Leonardo's works on a more personal level.

As the sun began to set, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Ristorante Santa Elisabetta. Housed in a 12th-century Byzantine tower, the restaurant offers an intimate and elegant dining experience. Ristorante Santa Elisabetta is a Michelin-starred restaurant, known for its exceptional cuisine and impeccable service. The atmosphere was romantic, with soft lighting and a refined ambiance. We opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey that showcased the chef's creativity and skill. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. The sommelier paired each course with a carefully selected wine, enhancing the dining experience. From the red prawn first course to the delicate desserts, every bite was a delight. It was a truly memorable meal, and I felt grateful to be sharing it with my family.

After dinner, we decided to experience Florence's vibrant nightlife at Locale Firenze, a sophisticated bar housed in a restored 13th-century palace. The bar is known for its high-end mixology and stylish ambiance. We stepped inside and were greeted by a fabulously hefty backlit bar, lined with bottles of liquor. The interior was a tapestry of rich textures, with meticulously restored frescoes and modern art pieces. We ordered cocktails from the art-themed cocktail list, each drink inspired by famous sculptures and paintings of the Renaissance. The bartenders were skilled artisans, crafting concoctions that were both innovative and delicious. The atmosphere was electric, and we enjoyed the opportunity to relax and unwind after a long day of exploring.

Today was a perfect day in Florence, a blend of art, history, and culinary delights. I am so grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful city with my family. As I reflect on our adventures, I am filled with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the rich culture and history that Florence has to offer. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the San Marco Museum, Piazza del Duomo and Giotto's Bell Tower. I'm particularly excited to see the frescoes by Fra Angelico in the San Marco Museum and climb to the top of Giotto's Bell Tower for a panoramic view of the city. And of course, we'll be sure to indulge in more delicious Italian cuisine along the way. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
