Today was a beautiful blend of historical exploration and simple pleasures here in San Miguel de Allende. Aoife and I set out to delve deeper into what makes this city so special, beyond its stunning architecture and vibrant streets. It’s funny, isn’t it? How a place can feel both familiar and full of surprises at the same time.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Oso Azul. I opted for the huevos rancheros, while Aoife chose the Spanish tortilla. We enjoyed the lively atmosphere and excellent coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. I must admit, I felt a pang of longing for a traditional Irish breakfast, but the Mexican flavors were a delightful start to the day. It reminded me of the times Liam would try to recreate international dishes back in Dublin, sometimes with questionable success. But it’s the thought that counts, isn’t it?

With our bellies full, we headed towards our first destination: the Protective Town of San Miguel and the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As we walked, I couldn't help but reflect on how San Miguel de Allende, founded in the 16th century, served as a crucial protective town along the Royal Route inland. It’s amazing to think of all the history that has unfolded here.

The Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, a short drive from San Miguel, was an experience in itself. Often called the Sistine Chapel of Mexico, its walls and ceilings are covered in breathtaking Mexican Baroque murals. The sheer artistry and devotion poured into this place were palpable. Aoife, with her librarian’s eye for detail, was particularly captivated by the intricate designs. I found myself pondering the cultural exchange between Europe and Latin America that UNESCO recognizes in this site. Back in town, we decided to take a stroll through Parque El Chorro. This park holds a special place in San Miguel’s history, as it was the spring where the town was founded. The park itself is built around one of San Miguel's most winding streets. According to historical data, the spring was discovered by Fraile Juan de San Miguel, marking the very spot where the city's growth began. Today, the water gushes out of a fountain constructed in 1960, and you can still see public washing tubs. It’s a peaceful spot, and it’s easy to imagine the early days of San Miguel unfolding around this source of life. As Aoife and I walked through the park, we admired the quaint chapel and the remains of the 18th-century baths. It was a tranquil escape from the bustling city center, offering a moment to reflect on the passage of time. I thought about my own hometown of Montpelier, Vermont, and how its history, though different, is just as deeply woven into the fabric of the place.

After our peaceful interlude at El Chorro, we decided to indulge in some local flavors for lunch at Don Taco Tequila. This restaurant is known for its vegan Mexican cuisine, and we were eager to give it a try. I ordered a selection of tacos, while Aoife opted for the ceviche. The flavors were inventive and delicious, a testament to the creativity of Mexican cuisine. We shared a refreshing Jamaica margarita, a perfect complement to the meal. As we savored our lunch, we couldn't help but appreciate the vibrant atmosphere and friendly service. It reminded me of the cozy pubs back in Dublin, where good food and good company are always on the menu.

With the afternoon sun still shining, we decided to explore Mercado Collective, a shop known for its artisan goods. Aoife, ever the curator, was immediately drawn to the eclectic home decor and handmade jewelry. We browsed through the Acapulco chairs, textiles, and ceramics, admiring the craftsmanship and unique designs. I found myself drawn to a collection of vintage maps, a nod to my love for history and genealogy. Aoife, on the other hand, was captivated by the handmade jewelry, carefully examining each piece. We ended up purchasing a small ceramic chime for our garden back in Dublin, a reminder of our time in San Miguel. It's these little mementos that bring a place to life long after you've left.

As evening approached, we made our way to La Única San Miguel de Allende for dinner. This rooftop restaurant offers regional-inspired cuisine with stunning views of the city. We were seated on the terrace, which boasts a retractable roof and a panoramic view of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. The atmosphere was cosmopolitan and lively, a perfect setting for a memorable meal. I ordered a grilled ribeye, while Aoife chose a seafood dish. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the chef's skill and the quality of the local ingredients. We savored each bite, accompanied by a glass of regional wine. As the sun set, casting a golden glow over the city, we raised our glasses in a toast to San Miguel de Allende, a place that had captured our hearts with its history, beauty, and charm.
