First Impressions of a Fairytale Fjord

Seydisfjordur has completely charmed me! From the moment I arrived, the town felt like stepping into a storybook. The colorful houses nestled against the dramatic fjord landscape create a scene so picturesque it almost feels unreal. Today was all about soaking in the atmosphere and exploring the town's most iconic landmarks.

The journey here was quite the adventure in itself. After flying from Germany to Reykjavik, I hopped on a domestic flight to Egilsstaðir. From there, the drive to Seydisfjordur was simply breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the Eastfjords. I was so glad I didn't forget my camera, as I was snapping pictures left and right! It’s a good thing I remembered to pack layers, though. Even in July, the Icelandic weather can be unpredictable, and a warm jacket is essential. I did, however, kick myself for forgetting my portable phone charger. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!

My home for the next few days is Hótel Snæfell, a cozy and welcoming place right in the heart of town. After settling in, the first order of business was breakfast at the hotel. Fuelled up with a hearty meal, I was ready to explore.

First stop: the iconic Seyðisfjarðarkirkja, also known as the Blue Church. Its striking blue color against the backdrop of the fjord is simply stunning. I learned that it’s not just a place of worship but also a cultural hub, hosting art shows and even summer concerts. Imagine attending a classical music performance in such a unique setting! I made a mental note to check if there were any concerts during my stay. It would be a lovely way to experience the local culture.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are the ones that surprise you, revealing hidden gems at every turn.

Next, I strolled down the famous Rainbow Walk. This vibrant street, painted in rainbow colors, leads directly to the Blue Church, creating a whimsical and joyful atmosphere. It was originally painted in 2016 during a Pride event, and it has become a symbol of the town's welcoming and inclusive spirit. I couldn't resist taking a few photos, of course! The colorful street, lined with charming cafes and art shops, is a must-see for any visitor.

For lunch, I decided to try Skaftfell Bistro, located in the Skaftfell Art Center. This place is not just a restaurant; it's a cultural experience. The bistro is known for its innovative menu that reinterprets traditional Icelandic cuisine with a modern twist, using locally sourced ingredients. The atmosphere is relaxed and artsy, with works by local artists on display. I opted for a delicious fish dish, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the town's artistic vibe.

After lunch, I ventured into the Technical Museum of East Iceland. Now, I'll admit, I'm not usually one for technical museums, but this one was surprisingly fascinating. It showcases the history of technology in the region, with exhibits ranging from old machinery to communication devices. It gave me a glimpse into the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the local people. I learned about the importance of fishing in the region and the technological advancements that have helped shape the industry.

Of course, no visit to Seydisfjordur would be complete without a bit of shopping. I popped into Gallerí Vigdísar, a charming gift shop showcasing local arts and crafts. Run by Vigdís Helga Jónsdóttir and Sigurður Hauksson, the gallery is a treasure trove of unique items, from handmade jewelry and pottery to beautiful prints and textiles. I found a lovely hand-knitted wool scarf, the perfect souvenir to remind me of my time here. Supporting local artists is important to me, and it felt good to purchase something that was made with love and care.

For dinner, I chose Nordic Restaurant, known for its breathtaking views and traditional Icelandic flavors. I savored a delicious lamb dish while overlooking the fjord, reflecting on the day's adventures. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

As I walked back to Hótel Snæfell, the town was quiet and peaceful, the sky painted with hues of orange and pink. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore such a unique and beautiful place. Seydisfjordur has already captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore more of the natural beauty surrounding Seydisfjordur. Vestdalsfossar, T. Larusson Monument, and Búðareyrarfoss are all on the list. I'm also looking forward to trying out the local nightlife at Kaffi Lára El Grillo Bar. I've heard they have great local craft beer, and I'm always up for trying something new!

“Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.” It's safe to say that Seydisfjordur is the perfect place to experience that feeling.

Good night from Seydisfjordur!
