Echoes of the Past in Tilcara
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Tilcara, a journey through history and culture that left me with a profound sense of connection to this enchanting place. As my trip nears its end, I find myself reflecting on all the incredible experiences I've had, and today was no exception. It was a day filled with historical exploration, culinary delights, and the warm embrace of Tilcara's vibrant atmosphere.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Chicha Libre Resto Bar. I opted for some traditional Argentine sandwiches. The casual and friendly vibe of the place was the perfect way to start the day, fueling me up for the adventures that lay ahead. It's amazing how a simple meal can set the tone for an entire day, and Chicha Libre definitely nailed it. I must remember to tell Daniel about this place when I get back to London; he would love the laid-back atmosphere and the delicious sandwiches.
My main destination for the day was the Casa Historica donde se veló al Gral. Lavalle. This historical house, where General Lavalle's remains were watched over, is now a museum that stands as a poignant reminder of Argentina's tumultuous past. As I walked through the rooms, I felt a palpable connection to the events that unfolded within those walls. The museum is located in Tilcara, Jujuy.
History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

The exhibits were thoughtfully curated, with artifacts and documents that brought the story of General Lavalle to life. It was fascinating to learn about his role in Argentina's struggle for independence and the circumstances surrounding his death. The house itself seemed to whisper tales of the past, and I found myself lost in contemplation as I wandered through the rooms. It's moments like these that make traveling so enriching, when you can connect with history on a personal level and gain a deeper understanding of a place's identity. I learned that after being killed, General Lavalle's body was brought to the house, where it was watched over as his people brought him from Jujuy to Bolivia.
After immersing myself in history, it was time for lunch. I headed to Khuska, a restaurant known for its authentic regional cuisine. The restaurant is known for using local ingredients. I savored every bite, appreciating the explosion of flavors and the evident care that went into preparing the meal. Khuska isn't just about food; it's an immersive cultural experience. The colorful artwork and rustic decor transport you to the heart of Jujuy Province. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. I opted for the signature empanadas.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, I sought out the Peña de Chuspita, enticed by the promise of live music and local vibes. This traditional bar is renowned for its lively atmosphere and the opportunity to experience authentic Argentine music. As I stepped inside, I was immediately enveloped in a wave of sound and energy. A local band was playing a mix of carnavalitos, huaynos, and cumbias, filling the air with infectious rhythms. The crowd was a mix of locals and tourists, all united by a shared love of music and good times.

The atmosphere was electric, and I couldn't resist joining in the dancing. It was a joyful, spontaneous celebration of culture, and I felt incredibly fortunate to be a part of it. I enjoyed empanadas with cheese and quinoa. I met many young Argentinians and tourists. The bar had a mountain house facade with a siku. The owner, Rosendo Martínez, also known as Chuspita, was there.
For dinner, I decided to try Senador Tilcara, a restaurant that had been recommended to me by several locals. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the elegant ambiance and the attentive service. The menu featured a range of traditional Argentine dishes, and I opted for the locro, a hearty stew that I had heard so much about. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the culinary heritage of the region. I savored every spoonful, feeling a sense of warmth and contentment. Senador Tilcara is more than just a restaurant; it's a destination for those seeking an authentic taste of Argentina. The restaurant is open for dinner from 7 PM to 11 PM.

This town has a way of capturing your heart and soul, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo journey, and I plan to make the most of it. The itinerary includes a visit to Paseo Artesanal PUENTE NATURAL and Mercado municipal de Tilcara. I'm excited to explore these last gems before bidding farewell to this magical place.
