Day 13: Soaking in Serenity and Sipping Under the Stars

The Bungle Bungle Range has been an experience unlike any other, but today, Maximilian and I ventured beyond its iconic domes to discover more of what the Kimberley region has to offer. It was a day of soothing waters, rugged landscapes, and the kind of outback hospitality that warms the soul.

Our morning started with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge. I enjoyed some fresh fruits and pastries, while Maximilian opted for a more substantial plate of eggs and bacon. Energized, we set off towards El Questro Wilderness Park, eager to experience the legendary Zebedee Springs.

The drive itself was an adventure, the landscape transforming from the familiar red rock formations to a more diverse terrain of grasslands and distant ranges. As we approached El Questro, the air seemed to hum with a different kind of energy, a sense of anticipation for the natural wonders that awaited us.

Zebedee Springs turned out to be even more magical than I had imagined. A short walk through a forest of Livistona palms brought us to a series of thermal pools, the water a deliciously warm 28-32 degrees. The springs are open to the general public from 7 am to noon. We arrived relatively early, which I highly recommend, because it became quite busy later in the morning.

As I sank into the soothing waters, surrounded by the lush greenery, I felt the tension of the past few days melt away. It was pure bliss, a moment of serenity amidst the rugged Kimberley landscape. Maximilian, ever the photographer, was in his element, capturing the play of light and shadow on the water and the vibrant colours of the surrounding foliage.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones that allow you to pause, breathe, and simply soak in the beauty of the present moment.

After our rejuvenating soak, we decided to explore more of El Questro Wilderness Park. We stopped by the Kununurra office to gather information about the park's various attractions and activities. The park is vast, encompassing nearly one million acres, and offers everything from gorge walks to fishing tours. Since we only had the day, we opted for a scenic drive, taking in the panoramic views and promising ourselves a longer visit in the future.

For lunch, we headed to the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, where we enjoyed a satisfying meal. The lodge is a lovely oasis in the outback, offering comfortable accommodations and delicious food. It was the perfect spot to refuel before our afternoon adventures.

In the late afternoon, we returned to our side of Purnululu National Park, specifically to the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge. The lodge has a licensed bar that offers a selection of local wines and beers. Maximilian and I decided to unwind with a couple of beverages. As we sat there, sipping our drinks and watching the sun dip below the horizon, we reflected on the day's experiences.

The Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company was our choice for dinner. We enjoyed a barbecue buffet with locally sourced beef, snags and saltwater barramundi. The communal dining created a friendly atmosphere, and we swapped stories with fellow travellers around the crackling fire pit.

As I write this, under a sky full of stars, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had today. From the soothing waters of Zebedee Springs to the warm hospitality of the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge and Caravan Park, it's been a day of contrasts, of rugged beauty and simple pleasures. It’s these moments that make travelling so rewarding, these unexpected discoveries that create lasting memories.

Tomorrow, we're planning a helicopter tour over the Bungle Bungle Range with HeliSpirit, and a guided walking tour with Bungle Bungle Guided Tours. I'm excited to see the iconic domes from a different perspective and to learn more about the area's fascinating geology and history. I'm a little nervous about being in a helicopter, but I know Maximilian will keep me calm.

I am very much looking forward to it!

Until then, good night from the Kimberley!
