Day 2: Almácegas Falls and Culinary Delights

Day two in Chapada dos Veadeiros was nothing short of magical. After a comfortable night camping under the vast Brazilian sky, Jan and I, along with our friends, eagerly anticipated exploring more of this natural wonderland. Today's adventure promised cascading waterfalls and the tantalizing tastes of local Brazilian cuisine. As a social media manager for a sustainable fashion startup, I always appreciate destinations that allow me to connect with nature while supporting local communities, and Chapada dos Veadeiros has been delivering on both fronts.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Buritis in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. This charming spot is known for its generous buffet of made-to-order pasta dishes. You select your ingredients, and they whip up a plate right in front of you. It’s the perfect way to fuel up before a day of hiking. I opted for a penne pasta with fresh vegetables and a light tomato sauce, while Jan, ever the adventurous one, tried a local cheese I couldn't quite pronounce. The portions were generous, and the flavors were vibrant, setting a positive tone for the day ahead.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to conquer the Cachoeira Almácegas I waterfalls. Located within the Fazenda São Bento, about 8 kilometers from Alto Paraíso, the journey itself was a treat. The landscape transformed into a canvas of rolling hills and vibrant greenery. The final stretch involved a short drive on a well-maintained dirt road, adding a touch of rustic charm to our adventure.

Our first stop was Cachoeira Almácegas I. The trail to the waterfall was a relatively easy 1.5-kilometer hike. As we walked, I couldn't help but notice the unique flora and fauna of the Cerrado. The air was filled with the songs of unfamiliar birds, and the landscape was dotted with interesting plant species. It was a gentle reminder of the rich biodiversity that Brazil has to offer.

The sight of Cachoeira Almácegas I was breathtaking. The waterfall cascaded down the rocks, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The pool at the bottom was inviting, although the water was a bit chilly. I took a refreshing dip, feeling invigorated by the cool water. The cascade reflecting off the rocks created an ethereal ambiance, perfect for some mindful reflection. Jan, ever the photographer, busied himself capturing the beauty of the falls from every angle.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are those that require a little effort to reach.

Next on our list was Cachoeira Almácegas II. This waterfall was just a short drive and a brief 300-meter walk from Almácegas I. The trail was even easier, making it accessible for everyone in our group. Almácegas II offered a different kind of charm. It was smaller than the first, but the pool was perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The sun beat down on the rocks, warming them up just enough to make lounging comfortable. We spent a couple of hours swimming, laughing, and soaking up the sun.

Around midday, hunger started to kick in. We made our way back to Alto Paraíso de Goiás for lunch at Zu's Bistro culinária italiana. I had heard great things about this place, and it did not disappoint. The bistro has a simple, unassuming vibe, but the food is anything but. The owner personally prepares risottos and pastas, and the menu is full of creative options. I opted for the chicken risotto with pequi, a local fruit, while Jan chose the sun-dried tomato and arugula risotto. Both dishes were bursting with flavor. The risottos were creamy and perfectly cooked, a testament to the chef's skill. We paired our meals with cold beers, which were much appreciated after a day in the sun.

After lunch, we took some time to explore the local shops in Alto Paraíso. We stumbled upon Capim de Cheiro, a charming store known for souvenirs, mystical products, and zen decor. As someone interested in ethical and sustainable products, I was drawn to their selection of locally made crafts and natural wellness items. I picked up a small aromatherapy candle made with capim limão (lemongrass), hoping to bring a bit of the Chapada’s calming energy back home to Amsterdam. Jan found a beautiful piece of amethyst, drawn to its purported healing properties. The shop had a magical, calming vibe, and it was easy to see why it’s a favorite among visitors.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at La Parrilla for dinner. This restaurant is known for its Argentine and Uruguayan cuisine, particularly its grilled meats. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with rustic decor and the tantalizing aroma of grilling meat filling the air. We decided to indulge in their signature parrillada platter, a selection of grilled meats served with homemade sauces and side dishes. The meats were cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful. The chimichurri sauce was a standout, adding a zesty kick to each bite. We savored every morsel, feeling grateful for another day of adventure and culinary exploration.

The warm August weather, with highs around 91°F (33°C), made swimming in the waterfalls especially enjoyable. The breezy conditions were welcome, keeping us comfortable as we hiked and explored. This time of year is ideal for visiting Chapada dos Veadeiros, offering sunny days and clear skies, perfect for outdoor activities.

As I reflect on today, I am struck by the beauty and diversity of Chapada dos Veadeiros. From the majestic waterfalls to the mouthwatering cuisine, every moment has been a sensory delight. Traveling with friends has made the experience even more special, allowing us to share laughter, stories, and unforgettable memories.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Cachoeira Dos Cristais and Vale da Lua. I’ve heard that Cachoeira Dos Cristais is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery , while Vale da Lua offers unique rock formations that are unlike anything I’ve ever seen. In the evening, we’re planning to visit Jacarandá bar e Petiscaria for some local drinks and snacks. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Until then, tchau from Chapada dos Veadeiros!
